02.03.2026 12:39 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0PBTA games are bad at telling you how to play and what the mechanics are for and why. Why else do we get people saying they don't like moves because the probability of success is not realistic... all the time

the long version, has more context
docs.google.com/document/d/1...
Check out www.youtube.com/c/knightsofl... and Derek's pbta videos, they are long but very good.
Also lumpley.games/articles/ of course, although i would not use the articles as gospel, if you think something baker says is wrong or weird then fine he invented pbta but he is not the arbiter of truth
..players make contributions when they have cool ideas that fit the fiction and their characters arc
- Don't prep
- Players should know the risks when making choices
- improv fatigue, you have it? you are doing it wrong.
- playbooks are drama machines
- Pacing to avoid move cascades
- Moves failing 50% of the time, unrealistic. Realism is not what the rolls are trying to ascertain. The rolls are there to decide if there is a complication, not whether or not an acrobat of 20+ years can do a handstand. Ties in with fail forward
- There is no specific group storytelling mechanic..
-pbta does not have a specific dice mechanic, what you use to randomize or even if you randomize does not matter in the context of what makes a pbta game a pbta game
-degrees of success, you only need 2: No complication and complication
- All moves fail 50% of the time? Not written in stone.
...
...
-Moves indicate places in the story where interesting complications might happen
-pbta does not need formal moves, moves can be anything
- all moves are not created equal, basic moves vs MC moves vs playbook moves
...
Well i tried to keep it short. it's only 7746 characters long ;)
Ill give you some keysentences and if you are interested i can post all of it.
-Follow the fiction
-Situation resolution not task resolution
-Fail forward, outcomes of moves are not necessarily ties to what the character is doing
...
... why did it tell me to do the thing in this way then take your hand of the wheel and override that whole basic concept of the game in the move?
I know what to do but is it any wonder that people bounce of pbta games?
Have you read a pbta game and the rules say this is how you do a soft move and this is how you do a hard move and these are the MC principles etc. Then you look at a move and it says if you miss do these specific things, in fact many moves are like that. And now you are wondering... T
28.02.2026 04:33 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I mean all? rpgs have buttons that you press. Call them feats, spells, moves or whatever.
28.02.2026 04:22 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Follow the fiction, make your own moves on the spot. Or just go you are a pirate obviously you can buckle swash or you are building engineer so yes you do know where to place explosives to bring down the building.
28.02.2026 04:12 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Sometimes yes, and sometimes they are very very broad. Sometimes a move says that if you fail pick 3 from a list and sometimes that doesn't make sense or you have a cooler idea yourself, do what makes sense or is cooler obviously. The important thing is that it's some sort of hard/soft move.
28.02.2026 04:06 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0... the MC can't be expected to know the moves of 10+ playbooks by heart with 5+ moves per playbook. It is a necessity that the responsibility of invoking playbook moves fall on the the player.
28.02.2026 03:29 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Definitely yes. I'd also add that playbook moves usually are different from the general basic moves which PBTA game usually fail to point out. They are often very specific and it often doesn't make sense to not invoke the playbook move by name and this is fine. Also more importantly...

Having a kid is a constant humiliation.
The other day as i took the kid and her friend on an event in the city center they walked behind me with sticks and poked my ass with it. Then they picked up some ice which they said were ice guns and they said they would shot me in the ass with it and...
