Better late than never: Congratulations to orthopedic resident, Jonathan Lin who did a wonderful job presenting his poster on his systematic review results of #ACDF in the #cervical #spine at the Schulich #Resident #Research #Day! Well done, Jon :)! Well done, Jon!

It was a pleasure delivering my talk on automated segmentation algorithms for #fracturehealing at #ICCB2025 in Rome. My humble growing team and I look forward to publishing our work & backing this research effort! #ortho #innovation

I always appreciate the " @troy-biomechlab.bsky.social talks people into climbing a mountain" session of a conference #ORS2025

The best sort of networking happens on a hike! @orssociety.bsky.social #ORS2025 -with @karenkruger.bsky.social and others

Sci1: @amilangscience.bsky.social podium was a highlight for me: Current thinking is that when a bone fractures, blood vessel rupture causes hypoxia at the fracture site. Lang et al. showed that the early fracture site is not hypoxic. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Sci2: 8th ORS debate - structural disease progression is more important than pain progression (Dr. McGee-Lawrence vs. Dr. Lance). While I don't know the answer, motion for won bec it was well investigated & presented: clear link to objectivity with clinical outcomes & good evidence to support.

Sci3: Our community needs a deeper understanding of #AI#ML as an applied tool for ortho problems. The general level of knowledge of AI/ML in ortho is still very much in its infancy. A tool is only so useful as we understand how to use it effectively and safely, and its limitations.

ECR1: This was my 3rd ORS and I've only just learnt how to ORS. My tips: prepare in advance the talks/posters to attend, listen carefully & build on your existing knowledge, take down lots of notes bec there are many escaping thoughts and reach out in advance to connect with colleagues.

ECR2: Brill talk by incoming ORS president, Dr. Maher: her slide on ORS journey resonated a lot with my own experiences and gave me hope. ORS used to be a very scary meeting for me: I was stressed sharing my thoughts, meeting research giants etc. I gained SO MUCH sharing my thoughts.

ECR3: Academia is a marathon, not a sprint. While I still need to work to keep my position, I am focusing on what brought me into this career a decade ago: a passion to help us understand #musculoskeletal problems using the #engineering tools I have.

Thought1: I thought my “education” was done. I have a BEngg (Biomedical), DPhil, did a postdoc, and an academic fellowship before taking this job as assist. prof. But yet I am still learning, and I think I need to keep keep learning and sharing along the journey.

Thought2: Great mentors are rare. I have been blessed and lucky to have had/currently have the mentors in my career, and I believe that it is (in part) my duty to remember the lessons that I have learnt, and to share those insights with younger generations. I try do this in my job daily.

Thought3: While serving in multiple committee roles in the New College MCR in Oxford, I learnt that the more you give into a community, the more you can get out of it. I've volunteered to join the @isfrfractures.bsky.social section as a member and look forward to contributing.

Fun: Hiking in Piestewa Park was a major highlight. Thank you @troy-biomechlab.bsky.social for including me – an early morning hike is DEFINITELY something that @orssociety.bsky.social need to build into the program as a mandatory networking event, divided by research interest groups.

Thank you #ORS2025 for hosting an incredible conference. I am grateful to all my new friends, colleagues & walk away with a mind filled with insights, so many incredible research Qs & a new found view of my role. Here are 10 key take-aways I wanted to share: (3xScience, 3xECR, 3xThoughts, 1xFun)
