For me, this campaign speaks to a considered, mature approach to journalism that is grounded in fact. We avoid shrillness and seek a range of viewpoints. We are not dogmatic and make editorial decisions based on the information in front of us. We know our readers come from different backgrounds and different places, and we celebrate that. We don’t talk down to people. We don’t pander. We do our best to give our readers the facts they need to make decisions for themselves.

None of these ideas are revolutionary, so it is somewhat alarming that this reason-centred approach has become a point of differentiation in the Australian media in 2025.

Mainstream media cops more than its fair share of criticism.

A cottage industry of critics has emerged, built by commentators with an ideological agenda and a string of hot takes about stories produced by hardworking reporters. The critics usually explain how they would have done things better than the journalist or publication, despite many of them not having made a worthwhile contribution to public discussion in eons. Invariably, their idea of β€œbetter” journalism follows the same recipe: take a story produced by a hardworking reporter, twist it to the left or right, add mayonnaise and serve with garnish.

can't believe other media outlets would have ideological agendas. thank you the age for pursuing an agenda of pure kantian reason

Why reason matters in journalism As the wider media landscape polarises to extremes, a new advertising campaign celebrates The Age as a voice of reason.

this is so embarrassing. not sure how i'd go about trying to claw back subscribers but would probably try something other than petty whining about mainstream media getting criticised too much www.theage.com.au/national/vic...

will never get over how much this stuff emulates the last 50+ years of dystopian satire. this used to be shorthand for 'bleak future'! how did we steer right into it!

Death Is Just A Change David Lynch has gone on to whatever the next place is. I’m very sad about it; it came at a hard time for the city of Los Angeles, a place he dearly loved, and it’s hard not to think his change of cons...

Really sorry to hear about the sudden passing of Kaleb Horton, a fantastic writer. Only seems fitting to share what he wrote for David Lynch kalebhorton.ghost.io/death-is-jus...

My redacted review of The Bad Guys 2. One unredacted section says it's "surprisingly thrilling even when you know the cartoon animals didn't really do all their own stunts."

I'm in The Big Issue this fortnight reviewing The Bad Guys 2 in possibly my final contribution, as TBI has cut the review sections to save money and lower printing costs. It's sad and frustrating. I've loved being part of it for the past five years, and hope one day I'll write for them again.
