Earlier we were treated to a fantastic @healthhumslboro.bsky.social talk by @saralread.bsky.social where she discussed her novels β€˜The Gossips’ Choice' (2020) & 'The Midwife’s Truth' (2023), and how case notes and midwifery practices in historical medical treatises are transformed into fiction.

The Guardian view on humanities in universities: closing English Literature courses signals a crisis With degrees disappearing and reading rates plummeting, the arts face a critical moment in education and culture

Universities are in a shocking state & the new government has barely begun the herculean task of stabilising the sector. It signals a cultural shift that risks leaving future generations without the critical, empathetic & intellectual tools provided by literature. www.theguardian.com/education/20...

Last evening we said goodbye to two phenomenal colleagues in Loughborough English. Deirdre O'Byrne and Catie Gill have been teaching in our department for over 20 years and next week will leave us for pastures new. The department will feel very strange next term without their presence.
