If you have a professor/teacher who impacted you in a positive way, send them a short email and let them know and tell them what you’re doing these days.

Teaching can be a thankless and exhausting job but one note can energize an educator for a year.

I once saw a pre-op nurse preparing a patient for surgery with a Doctor named Michael Jordan.

When the nurse was asked if the doctor was good, he replied β€œoh yeah, he’s like the Patrick Ewing of surgery.”

One of the funniest lines I ever heard.

Sad that meteorologists have entered the "getting death threats because disinformation about your job has been politically weaponized" club.

What followed was disappointing. When I was invited, I asked around and indeed the organizers were talking to some well-known people with quite different views who were likely to speak. However, it was not so straightforward. Some invitees weren’t able to make it, or withdrew, or didn’t want to participate in an event with other speakers whose views and behavior they found attacking or abhorrent.

After "inviting" vaccine scientist Peter Hotez in a tweet, summit organizer Jay Bhattacharya retweeted a bunch of weird conspiracy theories about Hotez + Covid vaccines & targetting him for abuse. From this statement, it appears Stanford's President would blame *Hotez* for refusing to participate.

From the Community | President Levin’s first order of business: abandoning academic freedom By standing with tenured faculty and powerful political operatives against contingent researchers and trainees at Stanford, President Jonathan Levin has already betrayed academic freedom, writes Mallo...

The new President of Stanford promised to protect academic freedom. I wrote about how he has broken that promise by giving opening remarks at a conference featuring speakers who led attacks on researchers at Stanford, particularly the Stanford Internet Observatory.

Remarks at Pandemic Policy Conference Following is the text of remarks by Stanford President Jonathan Levin, as prepared for delivery at Pandemic Policy: Planning the Future, Assessing the Past.

For those curious, the President's remarks at the summit have been published here. They address none of my concerns and seem to chastise faculty who refused to engage with people who have relentlessly harassed their colleagues. Shameful.
