I will never understand why we didn't call them bleats.

Why aren't we calling them bleats.

Conversion therapy presumes the therapist knows the middle and end of the story before they even get through the beginning -- much less the prequel.

Therapy is sort of like a carnival mirror room. Every angle shows a different version of you. And the work is realizing none of them are the whole picture, yet all belong to you. #mentalhealth #therapistsky #therapy

Finished Trauma Plot by Jamie Hood last night. It's a difficult read but deeply worth it. Grappling w/her inner and external external life is raw, vulnerable, messy, & highly intelligent & insightful. I borrowed it from the library but will be buying my own copy. CW: graphic descriptions of rape.

Forgiveness for the abuser? That's for them to work out for themself.

- getting caught in an avalanche you couldn't outrun.
- disconnecting from your body to protect your heart.
- making survival choices you wouldn't otherwise have made.
- believing other people's cruel words and actions.
- being someone who was able to be hurt.

That's not to say there isn't a role for forgiveness in healing. But in my experience, the person in need of forgiveness is usually oneself -- forgiveness for (not an exhaustive list):

As a trauma therapist, I'm often asked if one has to forgive the abuser/assailant in order to heal. The answer is no.

Convo #2 with my dad yesterday included cameos from my mom and my son. Topics ranged from fear to intuition to embracing people's full humanity, even/especially when they've done something truly horrifying. (He worked in corrections his entire career.)

Yeah, my EHR offers it and there is no way I'm taking them up on it. It horrifies me.

Find yourself a therapist who works with dreams if you're at all inclined in that direction. I've never gotten so much from therapy as when I'm working with a deeply knowledgeable dreamworker.

This afternoon I sat with my transcript of conversation #1 with my dad and combed through it for themes that could become chapters. There are so many! I can't wait to see how they gel in the end. I'm feeling so happy and excited about this project. Convo #2 is next week.

Listening to the first recording of my conversations with my dad, I'm wondering if this should be a podcast instead of/in addition to a book. It's such a pleasure to listen to him spin a story and ponder his life.

I took a big step toward a major life goal yesterday -- sat down with my dad to begin record conversations about our respective careers (mine in psychotherapy, his in social work). I've combed through the transcript several times today. I'm so lucky to have him, so excited to see where this leads.
