I will never understand why we didn't call them bleats.

Conversion therapy presumes the therapist knows the middle and end of the story before they even get through the beginning -- much less the prequel.

Therapy is sort of like a carnival mirror room. Every angle shows a different version of you. And the work is realizing none of them are the whole picture, yet all belong to you. #mentalhealth #therapistsky #therapy

Cover of the book "Trauma Plot: A Life" by Jamie Hood: black background with the title in all caps block letters in red and pink; the author's name at the bottom in white. Photo of an ancient statue of the Greek Philomela dominating the center between lines of text. She is squatting and has cloth over her lower body while her torso is bare. Instead of arms, she has wings.

Finished Trauma Plot by Jamie Hood last night. It's a difficult read but deeply worth it. Grappling w/her inner and external external life is raw, vulnerable, messy, & highly intelligent & insightful. I borrowed it from the library but will be buying my own copy. CW: graphic descriptions of rape.

Attended the inaugural meeting of a new community-building book club this evening! First read: Confessions of an Economic Hit Man by John Perkins. Looking forward to deeper conversations and local action with my neighbors.

Forgiveness for the abuser? That's for them to work out for themself.

- getting caught in an avalanche you couldn't outrun.
- disconnecting from your body to protect your heart.
- making survival choices you wouldn't otherwise have made.
- believing other people's cruel words and actions.
- being someone who was able to be hurt.

That's not to say there isn't a role for forgiveness in healing. But in my experience, the person in need of forgiveness is usually oneself -- forgiveness for (not an exhaustive list):

As a trauma therapist, I'm often asked if one has to forgive the abuser/assailant in order to heal. The answer is no.

Wonderful! Thank you for sharing your perspective. I recognize my own growing awarenesses in a lot of what you say.

Convo #2 with my dad yesterday included cameos from my mom and my son. Topics ranged from fear to intuition to embracing people's full humanity, even/especially when they've done something truly horrifying. (He worked in corrections his entire career.)

Yeah, my EHR offers it and there is no way I'm taking them up on it. It horrifies me.

The covers of two books, side by side: On the left is George Takei's They Called Us Enemy with a picture of a young Asian child facing the viewer, standing in a line with other people who are facing away and holding suitcases. In the background are a soldier with a gun, a barbed wire fence, a line of buildings, and a watchtower.

On the right is the cover of Art Spiegelman's Maus. On the bottom third of the cover is a drawing of two mice in overcoats, one with its arm around the other, facing the viewer. Above and behind them, taking up the rest of the cover, is a black swastika in a white circle. A stylized cat face is at the center of the swastika.

Read these two back-to-back over the weekend. I can still feel them working in me.

Find yourself a therapist who works with dreams if you're at all inclined in that direction. I've never gotten so much from therapy as when I'm working with a deeply knowledgeable dreamworker.

This afternoon I sat with my transcript of conversation #1 with my dad and combed through it for themes that could become chapters. There are so many! I can't wait to see how they gel in the end. I'm feeling so happy and excited about this project. Convo #2 is next week.

A marina at twilight. The sky fades from dark blue at the top to very light blue at the middle of the frame, where it meets a series of covered slips; the three on the right are closed up but the three on the left are lit from within. The light is reflected in the dark water below. In the foreground is a swatch of brown scrub grass in dark shadow.

For your toolbox: On days when gratitude feels like a heavy lift, just write down one thing you would have missed (if, for example, you had left the world the night before) -- something you wouldn't have *wanted* to miss. Something as small as a butterfly or as big as the sky. #WouldaMissedList

Book cover with the title "The Gilded Ones" by Namina Forna. At the top is the tagline "Outcasts by blood. Warriors by choice." The cover image is an adolescent Black girl in a gold and dark red top, and gold and blue beaded necklaces. Her hair is held back with gold bands, and on her face are three gold arcs going from the corner of one eye down to her jawline.

Took a day trip with the family to Portland, Oregon today. After the obligatory visit to @powells.bsky.social, we hit up the Skeleton Key Odditorium -- both fun and intriguing. So much to ponder of the edges of human experience. Photo: items made of uranium glass, displayed under black light.

Listening to the first recording of my conversations with my dad, I'm wondering if this should be a podcast instead of/in addition to a book. It's such a pleasure to listen to him spin a story and ponder his life.

I took a big step toward a major life goal yesterday -- sat down with my dad to begin record conversations about our respective careers (mine in psychotherapy, his in social work). I've combed through the transcript several times today. I'm so lucky to have him, so excited to see where this leads.
