@brownerika.bsky.social and I challenge financial literacyโs claim of universality. Our paper also aims to advance a contextualized definition of financial literacy that recognizes the institutional and structural barriers that constrain financial decision making for racialized minority groups

We find that financial literacy was not universally protective. It was associated with reduced healthcare disengagement (ie health precarity) for white adults but was unrelated to Black adults health precarity. For Hispanic adults, financial literacy was associated with increased health precarity.

So happy this work with brilliant friend and colleague is finally published! We challenge the idea that financial competency is beneficial for all racial and ethnic groups. In this paper we look at healthcare disengagement due to cost concerns (eg not filling prescriptions due to cost concerns)

Pink flyer that has black text describing the study โCall for Participants. Do you identify as black and are into anime video games, board games, and or comics? I wanna hear about your experiences in the spaces and beyond. Participation will include a 20 minute pre-interview survey and a 60 to 90 minute interview. If youโre interested, please scan the QR code or email Andrea Smith @Andrea-C-Smith@uiowa.eduโ. The IRB number (202409056) is at the very bottom along with a University of Iowa logo. As far as decorations, there is a dark and light pink checkerboard print in the background and purple embellishments on the flyer like a cat in the bottom right corner, shooting star in the upper left corner, and fancy, curly heart in the center of the flyer. Thereโs also a hand making a K-pop heart in the bottom left hand corner as if to thank the reader for stopping to read and consider participating. ๐
Iโm conducting a study that explores the experiences of Black folks in nerd coded spaces, focusing on both the challenges and joys found within these communities. If youโre interested, please scan the QR code or email me at andrea-c-smith@uiowa.edu. Iโd love to hear from you! ๐

Hi! I also submitted an R36 but havenโt received any email like that. Which sub agency did you submit to?

I submitted for an R36 dissertation award for aging related research last cycle and knew this would be the likely (and even best case) scenario for any of the NIH DEI related awards but hearing this is their official recommendation? Absolutely devastating.
