Mass firings of probationary federal workers begin at NOAA, including many in Boulder Employees received emails Thursday informing them of their abrupt termination, despite a U.S. District Court ruling calling such firings’ legality into question

These mass terminations of our nation’s brightest scientists — including in Boulder and beyond — are clearly unlawful, and we will do everything we can to reverse them!

This is the first in an occasional series on ‘older ocean science papers you should read’.

Ever wonder why cans no longer have Pb soldered seams? In 1980, Settle and Patterson used methods developed to measure Pb in seawater and measured lead in canned tuna. In Science (tinyurl.com/y4z83z8j), 1/4

Imperial shuttle spacecraft from Star Wars franchise

The original from Charles and Fairbanks is one of the great data visualizations in our field. But it should be called the Imperial Shuttle.

It tells me they don’t trust the associate editors’ judgment.

We’re doing a little Cd reconstruction in Baffin Bay and the GEOTRACES data through Parry Channel has been very handy.

Are you going to have cadmium from Nares Strait? I want to see 0.3 nmol/kg at the north end.

OK, but if hiring for an Asst Prof or a job requiring similar experience, I still don’t care about citations. It will be statistics of small numbers.

Value quality in publications, and ignore numbers of publications and numbers of citations. Judge junior faculty on the importance of their work, not metrics. Never mention an H-index in a tenure letter.
