Self-Improvement in Astellian Friendship

Tyra Lennie

Abstract

In this article, I argue that existing literature discounts the role of self-improvement in Astellian friendship. To make this element central, I show how an Epicurean analysis of Astellian friendship brings self-improvement clearly into focus. On the way to centering self-improvement, I show how extant accounts imply self-improvement without explicitly setting up the architecture to explain this element of
Astellian friendship. Self-improvement is centralized by way of three shared themes between the Epicurean Garden and the Astellian religious retirement: the motivation to enter, the project inside, and the manner of friendship.

Keywords: Mary Astell, early modern philosophy, Epicurus, self-improvement, friendship

ABSTRACT In this paper, I examine John Rawls’ claim (1971, p. 17) that Justice as Fairness cannot include considerations about the environment and non-human animals, given that β€œthe status of the natural world and our proper relation to it is not a constitutional essential or a basic question of justice” (Rawls, 1993, p. 246). The paper scrutinizes this perspective and argues that securing a Rawlsian well-ordered society is not possible without concern for the rest of nature. Through a more charitable reading that draws from anti-capitalist and environmental justice frameworks, we can discern how Rawlsian justice tightly connects to these issues. I conclude that the Rawlsian well-ordered society must be committed to anti-capitalist environmental justice.

KEYWORDS Rawls; environmental justice; political philosophy; anti-capitalism

An editor saw the potential of this novella and published it. It's selling well and has glowing reviews. Yet it was rejected so many times. I knew it's a good story. Don't give up. www.amazon.com/Artistry-Mag...

The Power of Political Recognition

This whole series has been enlightening and very accessible while still going deep into the Philosophical background. Really valuable given, "the situation". @ellieanderphd.bsky.social

It's been a decade since my first publication in a philosophy journal! I'm still proud of this 2014 article, an analysis of Beauvoir's ethics through a reading of the mΓ©nage Γ  trois in her novel She Came to Stay

This July 4, I think about my Cuban friends who’ve served at GuantΓ‘namo, protecting Cuba’s border with the 125-year illegal US naval base. They wake up hearing the US anthem blasted on Cuban soil. On July 4 they have to listen to fireworks blasted by their imperialist occupiers.
