A recent US study showed one simple intervention - giving 1700 people $400 a month to spend on what they wished - resulted in 27% fewer visits to emergency services. Julia Cream explores whether this could work in the UK and places where similar ideas are being tested. https://bit.ly/3M6v2qI

Hospices are on the brink. Surging costs have led to many services being cut back β just as demand is rising, fast, because of our ageing population.
The situation is not sustainable β and time is running out.

The government is reportedly planning at least Β£6 billion a year in cuts to benefits for people with a disability or long-term health condition.
These cuts risk pushing people already experiencing hardship and ill health even closer to the brink. π½ 1/2

Dementia is losing the person bit by bit, slowly, one piece at a time. Sometimes, getting the wrong word can seem funny but it becomes a cruel, fragmented loss which affects everyone around the person at the centre.

Why tackle child poverty now? asks @mikebrewerecon.bsky.social
Britain is a rich country that can afford to defend itself and ensure children dont grow up in poverty.
If we can't defend ourselves we won't be rich for much longer, and if we can't support our children what's the point of being rich?

By 2050, the global cost of dementia is projected to be $1.6 trillion.
To lift that many bills into geosynchronous orbit, it would take 192,771 @SpaceX Falcon 9 launches. With #Starship? -- 76,190 launches . π
The financial toll will be astronomicalβand it falls on families. Repost π

Shelter condemns βshockingβ 14% rise in homelessness across England
Charity says soaring private rents, rising evictions and lack of affordable social housing are to blame
Shocking 14% rise in homelessness in England.
354,000 people homeless, includes 161,500 children - equivalent to city the size of Coventry.
Result of austerity, real wage/benefit cuts, unchecked profiteering.
Govts make slogans do nothing to end inequities.

Good palliative care can alleviate the pain of dying β this bill means Labour must fund it | Rachel Clarke
Making dying easier is not the solution when NHS, social and palliative care are simply not there for patients
My direct appeal to @rthonwesstreeting.bsky.social
& Keir_Starmer in the light of yesterday's vote on AD.
If they sincerely care about dying people, surely now they will publicly & urgently commit to properly funding our threadbare, neglected palliative care?
