As a war refugee, Georg Grosz was not a wealthy man. He taught at the Art League in Huntington. His masterpiece Eclipse of the Sun was found in the attic of his auto mechanic in the 1960's, well after his death in 1959. Rumor has it he used it to pay for a car repair.

She's not one to have watched events unfold in the newspapers of the day or by word of mouth from her social circle in college there having been plenty of Iranians in US schools at the time.

Maybe she should ask the opinion of someone who was at least around at the time.

In countries where an education signifies skill, pay goes up with education; in countries where an education has only been used as a proxy to measure hereditary class or social status, pay drops on average when education is opened up to more classes of people.

In the US, pay depends on how young, white and male you are: white male truck driver high school dropouts make more than black female school teachers with MEd, e.g. And, predictably the pay premium of an education in the US started to nosedive when women became a majority of the college grads.

This is my theory having lived & worked in 5 of these countries including the UK. In the UK your pay depends on class signifiers: your accent and parentage. Before the higher education education, primarily "elites" were educated. Once that was expanded, it was no longer such a high class signifier.
