George Grosz's "Eclipse of the Sun" (1926) - The Heckscher Museum of Art Eclipse of the Sunย is a masterpiece of political art and one of the most significant paintings in a public collection on Long Island. As signaled by the dollar sign darkeningโ€ฆ

As a war refugee, Georg Grosz was not a wealthy man. He taught at the Art League in Huntington. His masterpiece Eclipse of the Sun was found in the attic of his auto mechanic in the 1960's, well after his death in 1959. Rumor has it he used it to pay for a car repair.

Good news: Scientists were wrong about how bad sea level rise is.

Bad news: Itโ€™s even worse than we thought.

She wasn't even born yet.

She's not one to have watched events unfold in the newspapers of the day or by word of mouth from her social circle in college there having been plenty of Iranians in US schools at the time.

Maybe she should ask the opinion of someone who was at least around at the time.

I Verified My LinkedIn Identity. Here's What I Actually Handed Over. I wanted a blue badge on LinkedIn. To get it, I gave a US company my passport, my face, and my biometric data. Then I read the fine print.

Many of us lived through this story and many like it (every couple of years there's "the thing that almost took down the whole internet") but this is the story of a particularly pernicious one, well-told, well-presented, and at a level a civilian can understand and enjoy.

...the US and UK are remnants of a vast global anglophone monarchist empire with highly hierarchical societies based on landed and mercantile wealth, entrenched through centuries of exploitation of the very classes who are now more educated, and yet still paid less. It was never about the education.

20.02.2026 16:47 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

In countries where an education signifies skill, pay goes up with education; in countries where an education has only been used as a proxy to measure hereditary class or social status, pay drops on average when education is opened up to more classes of people.

It's no coincidence that ...

20.02.2026 16:42 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 1    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

In the US, pay depends on how young, white and male you are: white male truck driver high school dropouts make more than black female school teachers with MEd, e.g. And, predictably the pay premium of an education in the US started to nosedive when women became a majority of the college grads.

20.02.2026 16:37 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

This is my theory having lived & worked in 5 of these countries including the UK. In the UK your pay depends on class signifiers: your accent and parentage. Before the higher education education, primarily "elites" were educated. Once that was expanded, it was no longer such a high class signifier.
