I agree with this too and have a similar reaction to YHF. Though at this point if it gets into the 2001 tourney, we will get all the discourse out of the way lmao.

As someone else mentioned, we probably could have done this for STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON (frequently listed as 1988, a seemingly less competitive year) but it still did very well in 1989! 2001 seems more competitive than 2002 from what I gather.

I think that album got some votes in 2000 but not enough to qualify (right, Kent?). So technically people could nominate it for 2001 I suppose.

You know what, I kind of like this awards season FWIW. There’s no Emilia Perez and there seem to be a lot of international movies in the mix.

I know Wilco self-released the album online but it still wasn’t physically released until 2002. In my humble opinion.

For the record, I didn’t get my first iPod until years later, but I was definitely downloading music (mostly individual tracks at the time) on Napster in 2000/2001. Most digitally available music back then was, uh, not exactly legal.

Interesting! I still think it’s 2002 though. I’m not a big Wilco fan personally but I do remember buying the CD in ‘02 because of the hype. And maybe Kent should run an actual poll.

As Kent had mentioned, that Dylan album (recorded in 1966) made the 1998 tournament. If it gets enough votes, it’s in.

they don't say the name "shakespeare" until like 80% of the way through HAMNET and i keep imagining someone who went in somehow not knowing hearing it and losing their shit

A recent example of this is Chappell Roan, THE RISE AND FALL OF A MIDWEST PRINCESS which was released in the fall of 2023 but didn’t really blow up until the following year.
