Hoping to finish this today. It’s been on my shelf for a long time (years?) and is unexpectedly wonderful. I thought it would be different from his other work, but didn’t realise it was such a meditation on a diverse range of art and artists, and on the intangible sense of the nebulous within them.

It sounds wonderful and ideal for such times, thank you! I did try to read Baron Wenckheim but did not manage to finish. Should I still try this?

Just finished this. How was it not better known when it was published in 1995?

Ah, yes, that's fantastic. We read it for our book club a few months ago - although it did divide opinion....

European Writers Salon Madrid 25-27 September 2026 Join us at the European Writers Salon in Madrid 2026 for a weekend full of literary delights and connection.

£200 to £255 (+ booking), depending on whether you come for the full weekend or just Saturday and Sunday.

We also have bursary tickets available from £100 (including booking fee) for those who need them. You don’t need to provide evidence, but we ask that people only purchase these if necessary.

We’re delighted to be joined this year by Yael van der Wouden. Yael’s debut novel, The Safekeep, was shortlisted for the Booker Prize 2024. It won the 2026 Women’s Prize and was longlisted for the Dylan Thomas Prize, the Wingate Prize and the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction.

The event will take place in different venues, so you won’t have a static experience, and will come away with a sense of the city and what it is like to live and write there.

Our programme is diverse, and the weekend is yours to shape.

We hope to be joined by around 120 writers from across Europe and beyond. All are welcome.

The weekend will include writing workshops, touring Madrid, hearing from outstanding writers and thinkers, and meeting people over delicious food and drinks.
