The BBC headline with "migrants" is already terrible and plays into the far-right narrative. And the solution to asylum-seekers being exploited by criminals is to allow them to contribute by working legally rather than making them survive on a pittance.

Media ecosystems refer to both traditional and digital media, which can either amplify, counter false narratives, or emphasise sympathy and condemnation for specific parties. Major Western news outlets have shown double standards in reporting on Palestine. For example, it has already been argued that the US media tends to emphasise Israeli suffering while minimising Palestinian suffering. Between 7 October and 24 November 2023, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post were 16 times more likely to cover Israeli deaths than Palestinian deaths. Similarly, words such as ‘slaughter’ and ‘massacre’ were 60 and 124 times more likely to be used when referring to deaths of Israelis as opposed to those of Palestinians (Ali and Johnson Citation2024). At times, journalists have been more receptive to Israeli narratives. In one example, CNN journalist Nick Robertson reported a false Arabic translation from an Israel Defence Forces (IDF) official despite being told by a colleague that this was incorrect (Al Jazeera English Citation2024). A colleague commented on this, stating that ‘Trusting the Israeli government rather than one’s own colleagues is “giving cover to the Israeli government”’ (Al Jazeera English Citation2024). This has all been made more potent by Israel’s prohibition of journalists in Gaza, which itself facilitates alethocide.

Resources such as funding enhance the scope and potential of disinformation campaigns, while expertise allows for more sophisticated operations. For example, some countries are ‘digital superpowers’’; they have the means to use digital technology to influence audiences domestically, regionally and internationally (Jones Citation2022). With its tech industry in the domain of surveillance and social media manipulation well established, Israel can be considered a digital superpower. They produce and export spyware such as Pegasus and are home to organisations such as Team Jorje, who run networks of thousands of fake accounts spreading propaganda on behalf of their clients (Andrzejewski Citation2023). The global matrix of coloniality also involves technopolitics, which is also a key modulator of disinformation and thus alethocide. The role of tech companies as gatekeepers in shaping hegemonic realities is increasingly crucial. History is littered with examples of how corporations can become more powerful than nations themselves (Jones Citation2023). The tech behemoths that are wealthier than many nations are mostly American and have selectively enforced content moderation policies, allowing pro-Israel disinformation to spread while restricting Palestinian voices.

In terms of systemic-ness and longevity, the US President Joe Biden repeated the false claim of decapitated babies long after it had been debunked (Scahill Citation2023). The longevity of this disinformation was emphasised when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeated the debunked information in a speech to the US Congress in July 2024. In his speech, Netanyahu falsely claiming that Hamas had burned babies alive and killed two babies in an attic. Netanyahu’s speech was met with widespread applause by the predominantly Republican audience, which itself indicated an uncritical embrace of the falsehoods (Haaretz Citation2024). The cumulative disinformation surrounding the killing of babies reflects not just media reach but also penetration into public consciousness and high-level political discourse. Biden’s repetition (Scahill Citation2023) of these unverified stories underscores the geopolitical modulation of disinformation, in which key actors – particularly political leaders – exploit their epistemic privilege to intensify the spread and impact of falsehoods. These dynamics illustrate how disinformation can be modulated through the hierarchical reach of political and media structures, producing long-term harmful effects.
