Paris Marx Poster with a picture of a smiling person looking off camera with a microphone and wearing a black shirt.

DATE: November 21st 2:30 to 4pm, Room AA 1043.
TITLE: Becoming an AI critic
ABSTRACT: Since 2022, generative AI has taken the world by storm. Tech leaders promised it would change everything, mostly for the better, but as the technology matures the drawbacks are becoming ever more apparent. In this talk, Paris Marx will discuss how he developed the critical perspective he uses to assess new technologies and the companies that deploy them. In the process, he’ll break down how he understands the impacts of generative AI and offer some ideas for where Newfoundland and Labrador, and Canada more broadly, might go from here on tech and economic policy.
BIO: Paris Marx is a tech critic based in St. John's and host of the critically acclaimed Tech Won’t Save Us podcast. He speaks around the world about the politics of technology and recently co-authored a white paper called Reclaiming Digital Sovereignty. Paris also writes the Disconnect newsletter and is the author of Road to Nowhere: What Silicon Valley Gets Wrong about the Future of Transportation.
Paris is a graduate of Memorial University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, then went on to complete a Master of Arts in Geography at McGill University. He’s now working on his second book, which focuses on the growth and costs of hyperscale data centres.

I should know this, but what are Poilievre's options to remain as Con leader? Take the seat of someone who was just elected? Not have a seat (and be guilty of what he accused Carney of?)

Cochrane mentioned it yesterday: I think Milton ON Terrebonne QCand Nunavut (and Terra Nova in NL needs to remain in Libs hands after that last poll is counted)

Open letter to the next prime minister: We need a royal commission on Canada’s future Canada thrived within a U.S.-led liberal international order after the Second World War, but that era is over. Our economic and security policies must evolve to meet modern threats.

More than 100 experts have signed our open letter calling for a royal commission on securing Canada’s future to devise a comprehensive and coherent action plan for the next 10-20 years. Thank you! The list can be found here: uniweb.uottawa.ca/sites/Open-L....

Economic Crises and the Breakdown of Authoritarian Regimes Cambridge Core - Asian Studies - Economic Crises and the Breakdown of Authoritarian Regimes

So. I wrote a dissertation on how economic crises can lead to the breakdown of authoritarian regimes.

Here are three key point to keep in mind as you watch the news this week 🧡

Lately I've seen many references to the 3.5% rule. A few years ago I pulled together this Q&A on potential uses and misuses of this statistic. www.hks.harvard.edu/sites/defaul...
