i think this definition works because genre boundaries are loose and often include elements from other genres. it's a lot more descriptivist than the prescriptivist definition of statistical games published in japan. lots of jrpg's were produced outside of japan or had staff that weren't japanese

i think he was mainly referring to their declined commercial success and lack of innovation. when referring to the jrpg's "golden age," he specifically cites how many creative and out-there games there were. this is why he doesn't consider their recent renewed interest as another golden age

the video's definition is pretty clear: jrpg's are statistical games inspired by japanese media. a lot of their identity revolves around inspiration from manga, japanese films, and previous jrpg's. dark souls isn't considered a jrpg because it primarily takes inspiration from western influences

i got one and loaded it with indie games (minecraft, shovel knight, stardew, etc.). it's so nice playing them on a true portable handheld. would love some recommendations though!
