one nice thing about the scarlet letter is that it's not a story by an algorithm specifically for one child

Everything the β€œdon’t tread on me” folks claimed to care about is being done by the people they now blindly support

Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.

I was at my old high school today, for the first time in over twenty years, to talk to the teachers about how their curriculum can better support students. AI came up, and so many teachers were saying "Well it's a tool, they have to know how to use it, it's the future so we have to accept it!"

a thing about human teachersβ€”it’s not just about having someone around who’s β€œnice” or β€œencouraging,” there’s no substitute for a teacher who likes ideas and enjoys being in a room full of thinking students

Let companies and employers produce workers and let our schools produce citizens. There is no vision of a thriving public education without reclaiming the central mission of schooling as the place where we live diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Higher Ed in 2025 is opening your mailbox to see that your institution has sent you:

1. A Center for Teaching and Learning call to integrate AI into your classroom; and

2. An Office of Academic Integrity email encouraging you to crack down on students who use AI to cheat.

My 10yo just showed my 6yo how to bracket a word inserted into a direct quote for clarity, so I'm doing at least something right.

All I want in life is to persuade everyone, when encountering politics & culture, to ask, "why are we talking about this?" I mean that very literally: anything you encounter on your screens reflects a choice. Someone covered that, talked about that, rather than the many other things out there. Why?

everything is on fire these days, sure, but how is it that 50% of all news stories are not about how I just spent $20 on a bag of store brand coffee at fucking costco

America’s Zombie Democracy Its trappings remain, but authoritarianism and AI are hollowing out our humanity.

AI and authoritarianism are β€œtwo sides of the same coin,” George Packer argues. β€œWe’re surrendering our ability to act as free agents of a democracy at the same moment we’re building machines that take away our ability to think and feel”:

Helping poem - Shel Silverstein Agatha Fry, she made a pie And Christopher John helped bake it Christopher John, he mowed the lawn And Agatha Fry helped rake it Now, Zachary Zugg took out the rug And Jennifer Joy helped shake it

I think of this Shel Silverstein poem a lot.

"...and some kind of help is the kind of help / we all could do without."

Rasmus Jarlov on Twitter writes: "There is nothing to celebrate. Moving from average tariffs of less than 2% on trade between the USA and Europe to 15% under today’s deal will inevitably lead to inflation. Almost everything will become more expensive in both Europe and the USA, and we will all be worse off. The economic illiteracy in the White House is doing serious damage to the West."

Stylish Skunk replies: "I have a feeling you have 0 idea what you're talking about.

In fact I know you do."

Rasmus Jarlov responds: "Of course. I am former minister of trade in Denmark and you are an anonymous Twitter profile. You probably know a lot more than me. For sure."

All these years later, I finally got to see them. They came through Nashville this weekend and my wife and I watched them perform new arrangements of songs from their whole catalogue, lots of acoustics and a string section. It was magnificent. Beautiful show, packed house, fully invested crowd.

I know, too, exactly when I first heard their song "Maps." It was the summer after my freshman year of college, and I was working in a coffee shop. It came on the store's satellite radio and I absolutely stopped whatever I was doing to listen. No way I was going to pull shots while that was playing.
