Wilma Pearl Mankiller Wilma was an activist, leader, writer, and the first Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. Her youth was affected by the Indian Relocation Act of 1956 which forced her family to relocate from Oklahoma to San Francisco. When she moved back to Oklahoma, she worked hard to improve Cherokee lives through health-care, housing, and education. She managed to double tribal enrollment and and revenues under her leadership.
