#MovieChallenge 2026 week 9: The Last Viking (2025)

Wonderful stuff. Does a fantastic job of balancing the tone between being really funny, sincerely moving, and having a genuinely chilling villain. Bravo, the Danes.

3: Rewatched “The END of the Tour.” We’re kind of through the looking glass here because the first time I saw this was for a challenge a few years ago (2022 week #4, “A24”.) I was impressed by it then and now, and Midwestern enough to be tickled by the Bloomington, IL setting (an hour’s drive away)

2: “The FINAL Season,” a tru-ish story about a small Iowa high school that gets one last season to continue its baseball-title dynasty. The original cut of this was 2 hours, but the only version I could find was 90 minutes; too bad the missing scenes must have been where all the subplots made sense

1: “LAST Flag Flying,” directed by Richard Linklater, a “spiritual” sequel to “The Last Detail,” not the same characters, but I could buy Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston, and Laurence Fishburne as those same guys meeting up 30 years later. Manages to be genuinely moving and very funny at the same time.

Watched Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time. In the final chapter of the rebuild of Evangelion, Eva makes everyone's life worse and the world insists on ending. Like Avengers: Endgame, Thrice Upon a Time echoes years of prior story, and delivers a spectacular and satisfying conclusion

3: Last Voyage of the Demeter. Absolutely pointless film. At least 30 mins too long, this didn’t tell anything worthwhile that isn’t already represented in the book or various films. Decent production design but just not worth watching 2/10

2: A Most Wanted Man. Philip Seymour Hoffman’s final leading role. Understated, dogged, unkempt yet intense. A dive into the treacherous, clandestine world of intelligence operations. The tension slowly builds, the final few minutes are Hoffman at his best. 8/10

Been on a French film kick this month, easy to add Last Year at Marienbad for this week's challenge! Technically a different meaning of "last," but you can read finality in it. (Along with many other things, this film begging for interpretation.) Beautiful film, visuals that feel very proto-Kubrick.

Firebrand (2024). The final days of Henry VIII reign though the eyes of his last wife, Catherine Parr. Competently told story with conjecture. Alicia Vikander is a little bland as Parr but Jude Law was having a great time as the tyrant. 6/10.
