Final ep of Book Fight went up today. 13 years ago when @mikeingram.bsky.social asked me to do a podcast with him, I thought it would be a little hobby for a few months but it's been the most fun & fulfilling work of my life. Thanks to everyone who followed along

Screenshot of the end of an email that reads as follows: … I will definitely miss doing the show. But I'm thankful for all the cool stuff it's brought into my life, including how many of you I've gotten to meet, or even just chat with online.

(oh wait, that makes it sound like Tom is dead, and not just on vacation in Canada.)

If you were desperate to end your long-running podcast, murdering your co-host and claiming that they are β€œon vacation in Canada” would be one way to go. Like, hypothetically.

Many thanks to @mikeingram.bsky.social & @tmcallister.bsky.social (rip??) for 13 years (!!) of Bookfight.

Well, friends, after 13 years (!!) the Book Fight podcast has finally ridden off into the sunset. One last episode, posted today, in which Tom and I do some reminiscing, and a bit of an exit interview (plus we write blurbs for each other)

They should invent a version of that Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind surgery that cuts out all memories of your novel draft, so you can revise it like you're editing someone else's manuscript.

As a faculty member at a university that has managed to do at least some of this, I will say that being unionized really, really helps.

Finishing your novel manuscript SEEMS like a good idea, but then you have to, like, let people read it? Gross.

i like watching kitchen rescue shows because even though i have made some mistakes in my life i have not drained my parents retirement funds and my own savings to open a restaurant called Gooby's while having zero experience in the restaurant industry

New York Times:

Although the two sides have made progress toward a deal, Harvard is also skeptical of Columbia’s agreement to allow an outside monitor to oversee its sweeping arrangement with the government. Harvard officials have signaled that such a requirement for their own settlement could be a redline as a potential infringement on the university’s academic freedom.

University officials, though, concluded months ago that even if they prevailed in their court fight against the government, a deal could help Harvard to avoid more troubles over the course of Mr. Trump’s term.

Also, fwiw, you don't need to do that thing where you compare your proposed book to existing books. It's fine if you already did that, and I know lots of agents/publishers seem to want it, so totally understandable! But I've always found it generally unhelpful, so no need to put yourself through it.

13 years, 763 episodes, didn't count anything else but a ton of books and great guests and weird flavored snacks and questions about vampire names and everything else between. Recorded the last Book Fight! with @mikeingram.bsky.social today. One of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
