Blackpool’s mental health needs are extreme – we need support that matches them — Chris Webb New figures from the Department for Work and Pensions show what too many of us already know – Blackpool is carrying one of the heaviest mental health burdens in the country.

New figures show the number of people claiming PIP has risen to 3.8 million – with Lancashire seeing some of the highest rates linked to mental health conditions such as anxiety, autism and psychosis.

In Blackpool alone, 6,300 people rely on PIP for psychiatric disorders.

This Bill lays an important foundation, giving us the potential to act in the interests of our communities and the power to make sure local people are heard. It marks the beginning of building a stronger, united Lancashire.

As the English Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill enters Committee stage, I welcome this landmark legislation – a transformative opportunity for my home county of Lancashire to gain greater autonomy, boost economic growth and strengthen public services.

This law is for the 97 who lost their lives, and for every family who stood firm when the State failed them. It’s about justice, integrity and making sure this country never goes back. I'm proud to back it alongside Justice Minister @alexdaviesjones.bsky.social and Labour colleagues.

The Hillsborough Law makes honesty and accountability the rule for every public servant. It puts a legal duty of candour in place – no more cover-ups, no more excuses. Those who mislead the public or refuse to cooperate with investigations will face criminal sanctions.

Labour is delivering the biggest upgrade to workers’ rights in a generation.

For too long, working people have been denied the security, dignity and fairness they deserve. Labour is changing that.

We’re putting workers first and building a Blackpool and Britain that works for everyone. 🌹

As the new school year begins, I’m reflecting on the incredible schools I’ve had the privilege of visiting across Blackpool South over the last academic year. Meeting teachers, dedicated classroom staff, school leaders and the young people themselves is truly one of the best parts of being your MP.

Phase 3 of the Million Hours Fund is now open – a £19 million investment from the Department for Culture, Media & Sport and The National Lottery Community Fund to give young people more positive things to do, especially in areas facing higher levels of anti-social behaviour.

My grandad, Dougie Webb, was one of those heroes. His sacrifice, and that of so many others, helped bring the war to an end and secure the peace we have today.

On this day, we honour their memory, their bravery, and the peace they helped secure.

We pay tribute to all those who served in the Far East, whose courage and sacrifice often went unrecognised for too long. Many endured unimaginable hardship as prisoners of war, and many never returned home.

Today marks VJ Day – Victory over Japan Day – a time to remember the moment that finally brought the Second World War to an end in 1945.

During my Super Surgery, I had the pleasure of meeting James, a caring father from Grange Park. We share the same goal of wanting to secure a better future for our young people, starting with every school across Blackpool South having at least one dedicated counsellor.

We've also been responding to invitations to visit constituents during my Beyond the Prom Tour next week, following up from my recent Super Surgery, and closing many ongoing cases to make sure people feel supported and heard.

We were also able to resolve a dangerous illegal parking issue after a near-miss involving a child. On matters like this, I'm proud to work alongside our local councillors to ensure residents can share their views on the safety of their roads.

Last week, my constituency office and I supported many people across Blackpool South. We acted swiftly on a safeguarding concern that required an immediate response and addressed a licensing enforcement case involving an empty property with a severe pest infestation.

Labour is returning stability to the UK economy and ensuring the people of Blackpool South can build a secure and confident future.

Over time, this will help local businesses in Blackpool South to invest, grow, and create more jobs.

It also means greater economic stability, job security, and new opportunities right here at home. 🗼
