Now, if I were orange county, I'd recognize this as the literal perfect opportunity to sneak the Centerline back into play. Build a two-station shuttle between ARTIC and Disneyland, and then everything else becomes just an extension - a bit more politically palatable.

My 45 minute bus commute became 20 minutes on my bike. I never had the intention of becoming so involved in the bike activism space…but when you make the decision to ride your bike as your main method of transportation (for environmental, health, financial, or speed reasons), you’re forced to.

Kids know what our leaders don’t: Painted bike lanes aren’t safe, so they ride on sidewalk.

The decision makers don’t bike or walk anywhere.

I’ve had way too many conversations with people trying to confidently convince me that the law does, in fact, say you *must* turn right on red. Also, that you’re legally supposed to yield a right on red without stopping. Gotta love drivers making up laws out of whole cloth.

It’s easy to be cynical and say they ignore them or they don’t care, but there’s a big green box in the middle of the road with a picture of a bike, and I have to believe most drivers register them as much as any other marking, so even if they ignore it, what is it they think they’re ignoring?

Putting aside their ineffectiveness, I feel the need to survey the average driver on what they think a sharrow is, and I’m being genuine. I think most people understand that all road markings mean *something*, so what do they think that particular one means?

Yeah, that sounds about right.

Center turn lanes have become a major pet peeve. They’re everywhere. Pure evidence that we’re wasting space just because we can.

I asked a county engineer why their plan had a suicide lane on a one-block residential stretch. He very quickly said, “the driveways”. There are maybe 3 driveways, and only on one side. I told him the rest of the street had no center turn lane despite being nothing but driveways. Blank stare.

Drivers: no time to slow down behind bicyclists, but plenty of time to completely stop in the middle of the street to yell at them.

Friend, you are far braver than I.

Noticing a trend lately of drivers laying on their horn behind me but refusing to make eye contact when they pass or we end up at a stop light, or waiting quietly behind me at a light, then cursing at me as they turn and speed away. Like, if you’re gonna harass bicyclists, have some backbone.

Bike lanes and narrower roads: The County of Orange is considering two amendments to its Transportation Element to accommodate bike lanes, plan for less wide roads, and remove a planned road altogether. Always appreciate plans that don't just say "more room for cars."
