This allowed Republicans to run a dark horse when they realized their candidate couldn't possibly get 50.1% of the vote. I'm sure they never anticipated that Taylor would come so close to getting that 50%. (Where's the laugh emoji on this thing?π Found it!)

The only reason he isn't being sworn in right now is due to a nonsensical provision in Texas elections that says that in any race of more than 2 people, the winner must get more than 50% of the vote or it forces a run off.

It's exactly what you, Heather, and Vishal were talking about-- volunteers and door knocking vs big money and populist 'affordability' issues vs divisiveness. He won the election, BTW, with 48% of the vote, 12% ahead of his closest competition.

If you'd like to see hope in action, take a look at Texas Senate District 9. Taylor Rehmet, IAM Union member, is in a runoff in a district that has been reliably Republican since i can remember by talking about making Texas government work for working people.
