This was the first year they really got to acknowledge, much less celebrate the holidays. In the past, there'd been too much happening, but this year, things had been thankfully quiet. This year, they could just be. And so, Yoongi had decided to go out on a limb and try celebrating Christmas this time around. He'd given Jimin a call at the start of the week to get his opinion; questions like 'was it a good idea?' and 'did he think Hoseok would be receptive to something like that?' were his main concerns during their conversation, and in return, Jimin had dissolved into laughter and told him to go ahead with it. Undeterred by the younger's amusement, Yoongi took the green light as the sign he'd needed. He'd been thinking it over before calling and figured that at the very least, Hoseok wouldn't hate the idea of celebrating Christmas, but he'd wanted a sounding board just in case. Even though he'd only had a week to prepare, Yoongi still had the chance to go all out; the perks of being the leader of the biggest crime family in the city were plenty, and he was sure he could pull whatever strings needed to create a blowout party if he was so inclined. However, it was his and Hoseok's first Christmas, and as it turned out, Yoongi didn't have any inclinations to do something so gaudy, so he'd scratched that idea. Next he'd wondered about having a get together with just their friends; the seven of them gathered by a fire with drinks, putting up decorations on a christmas tree, exchanging gifts perhaps... but no, even that felt over the top. He was no stranger to feeling selfish, so of course he recognized the feeling when it stirred in his chest as he thought about having to spend their first real Christmas with anyone other than each other.

And so, he'd narrowed all of the grandiose gestures flitting around in his mind to an overly simple two-step plan. An overly simple two-step plan that hardly needed any string-pulling, and yet suddenly seemed so daunting. But he'd committed to it, and the time had come, so there was no going back now: That fateful Christmas eve, he stood at the foot of the stairs, and met Hoseok, who'd only just woken up and was heading downstairs, most likely in search of him. "Oh, there you are; you weren't in bed and—" Hoseok paused, taking in Yoongi's appearance. "Hm? You're dressed already, are we going somewhere today?" Heat prickled under the collar of the long coat Yoongi had snagged from the closet and rushed to put on once he'd heard Hoseok's footsteps from upstairs. This was the most mortifying thing he'd done in a long time, Yoongi thought. "Not-" he blew out a soft breath and tried again, taking in Hoseok's bedhead and half-awake expression. "We...aren't going anywhere," he clarified, well aware of the rising warmth creeping up his neck. "Just. I got you something, is all." This time, Hoseok appeared more awake, curiosity taking precedence over everything else. "What-" Yoongi thrust forward the giftbag he'd been hiding behind his back before Hoseok could say anything more. He wondered, with a strange and sudden sense of dismay if he should have wrapped the item instead, but it was too late now. Hoseok had seen the festive bag, furrowed his brow, and cleared the remaining three steps he needed to be face to face with Yoongi.

As he took it from Yoongi, Yoongi began, "I know you must not think much about the holidays, and usually, neither do I, but this year I figured we could... give it a try on a small scale, so I got you-" With a brief rustling sound, Hoseok dug the green cardigan out of the bag, eyes bright with warmth. "You got me a Christmas present." Yoongi's cheeks flushed redder on their own accord when Hoseok's attention shifted from the sweater back to him. And so, huffing, Yoongi started to say, "It isn't so much a gift, more than it's a-" "...But I didn't get you anything," Hoseok murmured a little forlornly now. Yoongi's eyes grew wide. "It's not really a gift,” he blurted out, perhaps a bit more bluntly than intended because Hoseok's expression dimmed a little more. "Wait no, it is a gift, but not like that...I mean it's not just yours-" "Oh?" the other asked. “…” Fuck. With a resigned sigh, Yoongi shucked off the coat he'd been wearing the entire time. "Jesus Christ, this is what I meant," he mumbled. "It's not just a gift for you 'cause—” Hoseok's jaw dropped in genuine surprise. "Ohmygod, Yoongi, you got us matching Christmas sweaters." Yoongi pressed his lips together, shut his eyes, fought the urge to hang his head, because yes, he had bought them a pair of couple sweaters for Christmas. The process of revealing it hadn't gone as smoothly as he'd planned, and came at the cost of abject mortification, but it was done. Step one of his simple two-step plan was complete.
