I’ve never attended #AllThingsOpen. Every year, I somehow miss it, but this year, I remembered, so I just looked it up, and judging from the speaker list, it feels overly corporate to me. Has it always been that way?

@b0rk I always describe it as replaying my commits back on top of the base branch. It’s as if I created a brand new branch from the base branch and cherry-picked all my commits one-by-one on top of it.

how would you describe what "git rebase" does in one or two short sentences? Assuming there's already an appropriate diagram you can point to

Don’t get me wrong—I really love the darkness in Lily, but wow. I think they’re using generative AI for this, and it’s not a good look.

What I hate so much about this timeline is that when you question the use of generative AI, the burden is always on you to prove that the AI won’t do the thing they think it will do. It’s never on them to prove it will be beneficial. They always start from the standpoint that AI works.

eBay still looks and functions like a site built in 1999, and they make lots of money.

Just sayin’.

@raganwald @paninid I opened LinkedIn today to find contact info for someone, and every single post in my feed was someone trying to convince me that AI changed their life and it’ll change mine, too, if I just accept it into my heart.

Obviously, I might be oversimplifying things, but we’ve had at least two major instances announce they are shutting down in the last few months, so I’m curious why their communities aren’t absorbing the burden.

When large #Mastodon instances shut down due to personal or financial reasons, I’m curious whether they’ve offered to turn things over to their admins/mods or community. I would think the community would jump at the chance to preserve their space.

@sean @derickr @m1ke @colincornaby I wish you were joking, too. I’ve heard serious suggestions for doing similar things, unfortunately. Many folks have no idea what the AI is actually doing, so they think it’s doing the work they expect it to do.

The paint is the way it is because it had been in a wreck 20 years ago and the front-end was repainted, and that’s the part that’s all worn away now.

@paul I thought you meant “remake.” I was never a fan, but I think shows can successfully return, especially when they provide new commentary on current culture. The only show that comes to mind that did this successfully was The Conners, though.

I think I’d be in favor of this approach. It doesn’t “erase” the types, while it steers clear of the difficulty of implementing them at runtime.
