Open Letter: Against the closure of the Master's program Sound Studies and Sonic Arts at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK Berlin) 21.01.26 Scroll down for the German version EN On January 13, 2026, the Berlin University of the Arts announced the closure of all Master's programs at the Central Institute for Continuing Education and Transfer (ZIWT). An immediate admission freeze for the academic year 2026 initiated the dissolution of the MA Sound Studies and Sonic Arts program. The consequences could not be more dramatic: As Europe's largest art university, with its claim to cover the entire spectrum of the arts with over 70 degree programs, the Berlin University of the Arts is not only losing an entire discipline. The city of Berlin, known and worldwide as a center for sound art and experimental electronic music, is also losing its only university-level degree program in this field! This is happening at a time when the UdK is struggling with significant budget cuts. However, the reason given for the closure of the degree program was the adaptation of university structures to the amended Berlin Higher Education Act. Berlin is one of the world's most important locations for sound art and experimental electronic music: since the 1980s, a lively and unique scene has developed in the city, with outstanding international exhibitions and festivals such as Für Augen und Ohren (1980), Inventionen (1982-2010), Sonambiente Festival (1996, 2006, 2021), Singuhr (1996-present), and CTM Festival (1999-present). The Sound Studies and Sonic Arts program not only continues this formative historical development into the present, but also offers a unique, future-oriented education with international appeal in this field. The Master's program has been in existence for twenty years now as a place for artistic research, theoretical discourse, innovative pedagogy, and international exchange. Its academic profile is characterized by a team of core and guest lecturers, including leading international figures. The current cohort of 63 students is learning about the diversity of media-based sound arts, as well as a broad spectrum of scientific research and theoretical concepts ranging from sound studies, musicology and art history, media aesthetics, theories of listening, (psycho- and spatial) acoustics to audio technology. Active students and graduates have been represented with their work at the Venice Biennale, documenta, Ars Electronica, Mutek, Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlinale, Deutsche Oper, Berliner Philharmonie, Atonal, Berghain, Deutschlandradio Kultur, and BBC Radio. Once dissolved, this established structure of knowledge transfer and artistic excellence cannot be restored! The quality of education offered by the program, its progressive artistic and scientific orientation, and its international reputation stand in stark contrast to the reasons given for its closure. Neither adjustments to university structures nor financial cuts justify the closure of an irreplaceable educational resource such as Sound Studies and Sonic Arts. The UdK Berlin is part of a larger cultural ecosystem; as an art university, it bears responsibility for the continuity and reliability of the artistic fields and bodies of knowledge it hosts. The present decision was made without prior consultation or evaluation, without involving students or staff in an exchange about the development of possible future perspectives. We cannot accept this closure. Instead, we demand a forward-looking institutional model for the sonic arts at this university. Januar 2026 gab die UdK Berlin die Schließung aller Masterstudiengänge am Zentralinstitut für Weiterbildung und Transfer (ZIWT) bekannt. Durch einen sofortigen Zulassungsstopp für das akademische Jahr 2026 wurde die Auflösung des MA Sound Studies and Sonic Arts eingeleitet. Die Folgen könnten dramatischer nicht sein: Damit verliert die UdK Berlin als größte Kunstuniversität Europas mit ihrem Anspruch, mit über 70 Studiengängen das gesamte Spektrum der Künste abzudecken, nicht nur eine ganze Disziplin. Damit verliert auch die Stadt Berlin, weltweit bekannt als Zentrum der Klangkunst und experimentellen elektronischen Musik, ihren einzigen Studiengang auf Hochschulniveau in diesem Bereich! Dies geschieht in einer Zeit, in der die UdK mit erheblichen Budgetkürzungen zu kämpfen hat. Als Grund für die Schließung des Studiengangs wurde jedoch die Anpassung der Hochschulstrukturen an das geänderte Berliner Hochschulgesetz angeführt. Berlin gehört zu den weltweit wichtigsten Standorten für Klangkunst und experimentelle elektronische Musik: Seit den 1980er Jahren hat sich in der Stadt eine lebendige und einzigartige Szene entwickelt, mit herausragenden internationalen Ausstellungen und Festivals wie etwa Für Augen und Ohren (1980), Inventionen (1982-2010), Sonambiente Festival (1996, 2006, 2021), Singuhr (1996-heute) und CTM Festival (1999-heute). Das Programm Sound Studies and Sonic Arts führt diese prägende historische Entwicklung nicht nur bis in die Gegenwart fort, sondern bietet auf einzigartige Weise eine zukunftsorientierte Ausbildung mit internationaler Anziehungskraft in diesem Bereich an. Der Masterstudiengang besteht seit nunmehr zwanzig Jahren als Ort der künstlerischen Forschung, des theoretischen Diskurses, innovativer Pädagogik und des internationalen Austauschs. Sein akademisches Profil zeichnet sich aus durch ein Team von Kern- und Gastdozenten, zu denen führende internationale Persönlichkeiten zählen (siehe Unterzeichner). Die aktuelle Kohorte von 63 Studierenden erlernt die Vielfalt der medienbasierten Klangkünste sowie ein breites Spektrum an wissenschaftlichen Forschungs- und Theoriekonzepten von Sound Studies, Kunst- und Musikgeschichte über Medienästhetik, Theorien des Hörens, (Psycho- und Raum-)Akustik bis zur Audiotechnologie. Weder Anpassungen der Universitätsstrukturen noch finanzielle Kürzungen rechtfertigen die Schließung einer unersetzlichen Bildungsressource wie Sound Studies and Sonic Arts. Sophtar at Most Wanted: Music Berlin Back in November I performed and presented the Sophtar at Most Wanted: Music Berlin (MW:M). The event that took place at the Kulturbrauerei, a multicultural centre created after the fall of the Berlin Wall in a converted 19th century brewery. My contribution was part of the Hybrid Music Lab, a platform within MW:M for exploring new forms of musical expression.

In November I performed and presented the Sophtar at Most Wanted: Music Berlin. I was particularly surprised by how much people enjoyed playing the Sophtar for the first time. Some people sat at my booth playing the instrument for nearly an hour! Here are some pictures taken by Lisa Vlasenko

Presenting at AIMC, Conference on AI Music Creativity Alexandre Saunier and I are presenting a paper co-authored with Maurice Jones about the behaviour generator based on large language models (LLMs) that we used during the Wilding AI workshop at MONOM, part of CTM Festival 2025. Some highlights of what we're presenting: LLM Behavior Generator that transforms textual prompts into expressive sound modulations and motions in space. Chain of thoughts involving a “recipe” LLM cascading into a “code” LLM.

TCP/Indeterminate Place quartet performs Reconciliation at Studio Acusticum TCP/IP live at Studio Acusticum 2025. Photo: Petter Sundkvist On Monday 9 June 2025 the TCP/Indeterminate Place quartet performed Reconciliation, a piece we composed in 2024 for a special double duo telematic performance in which two of us performed at the Kapelle der Versöhnung in Berlin and the other two at the Orgelpark in Amsterdam. This time we were all at the Studio Acusticum main concert hall, playing our instruments and interacting with the massive Acusticum/University pipe organ in several ways.
