Important to Note! Scrapped the 3D platformer portion of the game to spend more time on existentialism. :)

(forgot to post this earlier before the playtest but judging by feedback from the beta test, i think it was def worth pivoting!)

Have made quite a bit of progress since last time. Used sprite billboarding to make 3D versions of the 2D assets and it's looking really cool! Almost done with the aesthetics and then I just have to do the scripting of the story progression. Also DontDestroyonLoad for scores... #SmallGameStudio

I've unfortunately had to delay progress on my project. I've been working on another game project, but I did figure out how to work with the animator controller and scripting animated player/enemy movements while working on it! May include for the 2D portion of my game. #SmallGameStudio

My next steps for the final project include modeling the 3D obstacles and drafting or finalizing the game loop (adding a game over screen + additional weird plotlines) and the actual plot emphasizng the awareness of the player that their in the game.

:D

Made a prototype of the 3D version of the Dino Runner game! Also added the time-based scoreboard to act as a placeholder for where the screen should be. In addition to the white border, I was also thinking of adding a transparent object to the right to act as the computer screen.

I've been trying to make a clone of the T-Rex Runner game and finally got a semblance of the mechanics. Have not gotten to do scoreboard yet but I've moved on to making the 3D portion. Scripts should mostly be the same so I think the most time consuming will be 3D-ifying things.

Ooooo that sounds cool! If you're using games like Split Fiction and It Takes Two for inspiration, will you be incorporating puzzles? Bc I definitely think it'd be an effective way to tell the parallel stories. :D

Flicker by JiNico Play in your browser

Uploaded my game! Unfortunately, ran into some last minute textmesh issues when building it and I tried to fix it as best as I could. Everything seems to fit on my monitor but not on my laptop even though I set it to scale the screen size.

I've been trying to figure out how to have an item fade away like the multicolored circles from "The Marriage" but I've been having trouble with it. Might have to shift depending on time and do something else for "juiciness."

I set up the main camera as a solid color w/ a black background. Then I made all of my game objects (walls & floor) black so that you could only see the light flickering and the unlit white material on the player cube.

This is what it looks like in-game and what it looks like in a gray color

I've decided to center my game on a item collection mechanic with an environment similar to Pac-Man. I'm also playing with light and player vision, hoping it will help me convey the idea I'm going for. The light flicker is really cool but making it a lil laggy...

This looks really cool and, even with the pivot, it still has a Pac-Man feel to it! I saw your original post w/ the Pac-Man clone and OOF I'm sure those walls and moving enemies were a pain to figure out.

Okay! This is what the Space Invaders Clone actually looks like. I could not figure out how to connect the scoreboard to multiple aliens so I just opted for the one. Maybe a getComponent would've worked to get a score variable from another script? For the time being, this is it!

I was playing with instantiating gameobjects and ended up getting something like this. I don't think I'm gonna do the rows and columns though because I'm having trouble connecting it to the scoreboard... it would make for a good end / game over screen though. πŸ€”

I decided to make a Space Invaders clone but it's proving to be much more difficult than I thought... currently trying to figure out how to make the aliens move and appear and connecting it to a scoreboard. This is what it looks like right now.

This is so smart! I didn't even think about using 3D models.
I spent so much time messing around with images and sprites, trying to move them around...

It looks really good! The setup of the objects and lighting give it a very personal feel to it and I'm really excited to play it!! :D

Cowboy Cat by JiNico yeehaw (but with cats)

Just uploaded a short text-based game titled "Cowboy Cat" in which you are the sheriff looking to grab a cold beverage at the saloon. However, conflict ensues. A DUEL?!

Here's the beginning of the game w/ music! The background images don't shift much. It's mostly the cat sprites and texts that I had to move around. It was VERY tedious...but I think it turned out well. :)

I GOT THE TIMER TO WORK (yippee)!! (some code below! don't look too closely 😭)

Definitely think it adds more to the theme. I also added some Western-y music from freesound and YouTube to help set the scene better. I've exported the project & just need to design the itch page!

Going with a Western theme for this next project. I've been trying to display a timer in text and it doesn't like me very much because it won't display. :(

If all else fails, I might transition to a choice based mechanic instead LOL. Stay tuned...

Candy Box ! Has a similar feel to Universal Paperclips but instead it relies on the player waiting for more candies to produce rather than actively clicking.

Haven’t played too many of the games with images so it was nice to see an image even if it’s comprised of text.

In Wolfgirls in Love, although it’s entirely text-based the font style and wording really help visualize the story. The text is paced really well especially when the energy suddenly shifted.

Colossal Cave Adventure is very reliant on the player to imagine the world. Because the commands are primarily compass points, mentally storing the game map requires so much brain power… :(

The Barnacle Goose Experiment was a lil confusing to play. It reminded me of the element combination game (idk the name) but bc it’s text it’s more difficult to figure out what’s going on.

Immediately into Universal Paperclips, it’s reminding me of Cookie Clicker. A few clicks in it’ll give you automated options to produce more paperclips. However it also gives the option to raise and lower the price per clips which is different.

I also did a number guesser lol. But your code looks much more advanced and efficient! I used a bunch of if and nested-if statements in mine. πŸ˜”

I also like that you included a way to quit the game!

I keep getting a 'foundQueueIndex' error and I'm not sure what's causing it. I'm in the process of trying to figure it out but it isn't stopping my code from running. Perhaps it's a setting issue?

I forget how coding can be so visually confusing. 😭

I used lots of comments just so when I look back at it with fresh eyes, I'd at least understand it quicker.

There's also definitely a more efficient way to code a number guesser game instead of writing an if for each number...
