Thank you, Reverend Lowery, for your lifelong dedication to civil rights, justice, and human dignity.

He became a minister, helped desegregate Mobile’s buses, joined the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and in 1957 co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference with Martin Luther King Jr. Lowery later led the SCLC for two decades, marched at Selma, and carried the movement’s demands to Gov. Wallace.

Have you ever been driving down Governor's Drive in Huntsville and wondered who Dr. Joseph E. Lowery Blvd was named after? Well, Joseph Lowery was born in Huntsville in 1921 and chose purpose over bitterness in the face of Jim Crow.

We opened the line and found corrosion packed so tight the water couldn’t even move. When a system fails like that, you don’t patch around it, you fix the root cause. That’s how I work, and in 2026, it’s how we'll Fix the House in Washington.

In 2016, Huntsville honored her legacy with the Dr. Mae Jemison High School. Thank you, Dr. Jemison for your contributions to science, space flight, and the legacy of North Alabama's pioneers.

In 1992, she became the first African American woman in space aboard the Endeavour, on a mission carrying Spacelab, developed right here in Huntsville. After NASA, she founded the Jemison Group, led the 100 Year Starship initiative, and created The Earth We Share science camp.

Born in Decatur, AL in 1956, Mae Jemison fell in love with science early, even correcting a teacher who told her she should be a nurse, not a scientist. She graduated high school at 16, earned degrees from Stanford, went to medical school at Cornell, and served as a Peace Corps medical officer.

Today, the John Stallworth Foundation sends students to Alabama A&M and other HBCUs, paying forward the chance Louis Crews once gave him. He's been enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, and the Black College Football Hall of Fame.

His 73-yard touchdown catch against the Rams in Super Bowl XIV remains one of the defining plays of that era. When he retired in 1987, Stallworth came home to North Alabama, settling in Brownsboro with his wife Flo and co-founding Madison Research Corporation, which he built into a major business.

The Steelers took him in the fourth round of the 1974 draft, and over the next fourteen seasons he became a cornerstone of their dynasty, winning four Super Bowls and earning a reputation as the man you wanted on the other end of a throw when everything was on the line.

The Pittsburgh Steelers weren't about to make the same mistake. Scout Bill Nunn stayed an extra day at Alabama A&M after other scouts had left, watched Stallworth run on a dry track, and liked what he saw.

The only coach who believed in him was Louis Crews at Alabama A&M, who offered Stallworth his sole scholarship and moved him from running back to wide receiver. Stallworth thrived, earning two All-SIAC selections and leaving the rest of the football world wondering how they'd ever missed him.

But at just eight years old, a viral infection had left him temporarily paralyzed, and no one knew if he would walk again, let alone play football. Yet, Stallworth had other plans and eventually found his way onto the gridiron at Tuscaloosa High, where by his senior year he had made team captain.

John Stallworth grew up in Tuscaloosa in the 1950s, one of four children raised by Mary and David Stallworth. Like so many young boys in Alabama, he grew up dreaming of one day suiting up for the Crimson Tide.

We had an absolute blast walking in the 11th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Parade with 20 incredible volunteers—laughing, waving, taking photos, and soaking up all the good energy along the route.

Come out and watch the MLK Day Parade tomorrow as Huntsville comes together to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Line the streets, bring your friends and family, and be part of this powerful day of remembrance and unity.

Today I stood in Montgomery with Democratic candidates from all across Alabama as we officially qualified to run. To me, it wasn’t paperwork, it was a reminder of why we’re doing this. Folks deserve leaders who listen, tell the truth, and actually show up for their communities.
