30.01.2026 18:41 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Anders Zorn has come to be associated with paintings of nude young women bathing. In his early paintings on this theme, the women often seem unaware of the spectator. They are not posing, but are simply captured on canvas while undressing or concentrating on getting out of the water. This spontaneous character is naturally false, and the nudity is a vital element in the painting. Nevertheless, these paintings are not primarily erotic; instead, the emphasis is on the effect of light. The nude body is hazy, to serve as a sculptural shape in the play of light and shadow in the overall composition. By Lake Siljan from 1905, on the other hand, is an example of how the subject was eventually exploited and became more explicitly erotic. Here, the woman is facing the spectator frontally, with her body fully exposed. The summer sun is used purely as a spotlight and not for subtle effects.

30.01.2026 09:09 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Zorn's painting Omnibus is a fleeting image of modern urban life, where people from different social classes meet in new ways. Zorn travelled regularly by omnibus from his home in Montmartre, Paris, merely to study the passengers. As the bus rolled through the city, the light changed constantly inside. Electric streetlights had recently been installed in Paris β and the mixture of artificial and natural light created new and unexpected effects that Zorn tried to capture on canvas. It is hardly surprising that contemporary critics described Omnibus as βultra-modernβ.

29.01.2026 17:46 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This watercolour shows one of Carl and Karin Larssonβs daughters writing, but it also has the character of a reportage illustration. It gives a straight-forward account of the interior, not unlike the photos found in todayβs home decorating magazines. The green plant stand made according to Karin Larssonβs drawings is a fine example of her design, which strove to combine aesthetic quality with simplicity and function.
