I understand also that if you enable FileVault on Apple Silicon, it doesn’t re encrypt (as the encryption already happened), just adds a password requirement. Don’t have a device on hand but curious if that’s also your experience

it’s also the Lockdown Mode precedent: Apple publicly hinting that all software is imperfect and we need defense in depth

The other thing is that Apple Silicon starts to decrypt once the device boots—so if someone managed to find a way to break macOS security mechanisms, they could decrypt the drive. FileVault won’t decrypt without the password
