As we head into a new week, please remember that your best is good enough. Try to not compare yourself to others, and donβt be misguided by other peopleβs material things or status. Those things matter not. If you can live each day with kindness, you are the richest soul. Rest well, my friends. π

I'm sure many I know here remember Sheila from our days on X. I'm so sad to read this news. Her advocacy influenced my thinking and was part of the inspiration for my pollinators' garden.
What a loss to her family, community, bumblebees and science.

BSky added a feature that allows people to be notified every time you post. A fine feature!
By default, it's set to allow anyone to do this. If you are prone to stalkers though:

A beautiful male Blackburnian Warbler singing.
An eastern foxsnake on a log.
A woman at Biggest Week told me that the Eastern Foxsnake is the Blackburnian Warbler of the snakes and it was the kind of sentence that I both completely understood and realized would only make sense to a microscopic group of people of whom I'm a proud member

This sent me on a bit of an etymology rabbit hole - it's amazing how many languages we get bird names from.
Cormorant comes from bastardized Latin, corvus marinus, meaning sea raven.
Gull comes from Welsh / Breton βgwylan.β
Eider comes from Old Norse βaetharβ, meaning duck.

βElbows upβ in Canada means sustainable resource development
βElbows upβ means many things today in Canada, including using the countryβs rich natural resources more effectively to support a strong, independent economy that benefits people and society.
In a new @theconversation.com article, Steven J. Cooke @sjcfishy.bsky.social (FRSC) and co-authors argue Canada must grow its economy sustainablyβby respecting Indigenous rights, protecting the environment, and prioritizing long-term well-being over short-term gains. #RSCVoices β‘οΈ bit.ly/4mcvvVX

I do a similar formula, factoring in likelihood of future years and costs. If what I'm doing today, X, likely buys me Y years more of this car, where I can reasonably expect to spend X*Y-ish over that time, is that >> cost of new-to-me car?

This Backyard Bird Has a Lot to Teach Us about Sex Variability
White-throated Sparrows demonstrate that traits we usually associate with sex can be influenced by genes that are not on sex chromosomes
I've been fascinated by the whole "four genders" thing that White-throated Sparrows have going on ever since I read the book Evolution's Rainbow in college - loved this refresher from Scientific American. www.scientificamerican.com/article/a-ba...
