Belated #FieldworkFriday post - doing some fieldwork yesterday I saw literally hundreds of these Mauve Stinger Jellyfish in the shallows. A new species for me, and so pretty!

Make plans to visit Pjila'si, now on view at the Museum of Natural History. More than just a gallery, it's an interactive space that celebrates Mi'kmaw culture. Come to engage, learn, and reflect on the knowledge, skills, and adaptability of the Mi'kmaw people throughout history and to this day.

The buff-tip moth (Phalera bucephala) has mastered a very particular kind of camouflage.

When they close their wings up, they resemble a broken twig.

Native to large parts of Europe, there's regional pattern variation that reflects the local tree species. This one best resembles birch twigs?

The Horned Grebe is a petite picture of poise and perfection. Not a feather out of place, she glides and dives with the grace of a ballet dancer. Until, that is, the children arrive. 🧡πŸͺΆ

Omg. I've been pondering how to plan food for a group field trip to a remote site. Enter my sibling, who does Burning Man. Sent me a spreadsheet with easy bulk recipes scalable to group size, including how to coordinate people helping with cooking! And the comments in the sheet are hilarious.

As we head into a new week, please remember that your best is good enough. Try to not compare yourself to others, and don’t be misguided by other people’s material things or status. Those things matter not. If you can live each day with kindness, you are the richest soul. Rest well, my friends. 😊

I'm sure many I know here remember Sheila from our days on X. I'm so sad to read this news. Her advocacy influenced my thinking and was part of the inspiration for my pollinators' garden.

What a loss to her family, community, bumblebees and science.

HEADS UP.

BSky added a feature that allows people to be notified every time you post. A fine feature!

By default, it's set to allow anyone to do this. If you are prone to stalkers though:

This sent me on a bit of an etymology rabbit hole - it's amazing how many languages we get bird names from.

Cormorant comes from bastardized Latin, corvus marinus, meaning sea raven.

Gull comes from Welsh / Breton β€œgwylan.”

Eider comes from Old Norse β€œaethar”, meaning duck.

β€˜Elbows up’ in Canada means sustainable resource development β€œElbows up” means many things today in Canada, including using the country’s rich natural resources more effectively to support a strong, independent economy that benefits people and society.

In a new @theconversation.com article, Steven J. Cooke @sjcfishy.bsky.social (FRSC) and co-authors argue Canada must grow its economy sustainablyβ€”by respecting Indigenous rights, protecting the environment, and prioritizing long-term well-being over short-term gains. #RSCVoices ➑️ bit.ly/4mcvvVX

I do a similar formula, factoring in likelihood of future years and costs. If what I'm doing today, X, likely buys me Y years more of this car, where I can reasonably expect to spend X*Y-ish over that time, is that >> cost of new-to-me car?
