Brexit: the trillion pound ‘mistake’
The recent NBER report suggests the Treasury’s 2016 analysis – slammed by Brexiters as a ‘hoax’– actually understated the impact of Brexit.

Cambridge for Europe is a cross-party, collaborative group campaigning to secure the UK’s place in Europe, and for the UK to rejoin the EU.

Canada has officially joined the EU’s €150 billion SAFE defense procurement program, the first non-EU country to do so. The agreement allows Canadian firms to participate in EU-financed defense projects. Fifteen EU members have included Ukraine support in their spending plans under SAFE.

It seems though that the Belgian government is trying to set requirements for "all member states" that it knows Hungary and Slovakia won't meet.
Hopefully the other member states will persuade Belgium to show more courage.
They're held every Saturday from 2pm until 3 pm on King’s Parade.
Some people are there almost every week, others once or twice a month, others when they can, but all are welcome.
Good discussion today with President Zelenskyy who was together with President Macron and European leaders.
We remain united behind a peace agreement that does justice to Ukraine.
One that fully upholds Ukraine’s sovereignty and ensures the necessary security guarantees.

Behind every right lies a person who needs it - a whistleblower silenced, a victim denied justice, a refugee turned away. The ECHR gives those people a voice. To withdraw would be to decide that some lives no longer deserve protection.
Human rights law exists to protect people when power fails them. Walking away from that protection would leave the most vulnerable exposed.

Against the background of a farcical US "peace deal", he called for European democracies to strengthen support for Ukraine, and to quickly approve the >€130 billion loan funded from frozen Russian assets.
This letter appeared in The Yorkshire Post on 1 December 2025. The writer takes issue with simplistic "Brexit was the will of the people" arguments. Leaving the European Union continues to prove divisive amongst the UK nations, with the hardline version of Brexit chosen by the then Westminster Government not the will of all the people.
@yorkshirepost.co.uk letter takes issue with #Brexit 'will of the people' claims. Not the will of Scotland & Northern Ireland.
No super-majority expect for 'serious constitutional consequences.' Govt chosen hard #Brexit means ongoing tensions: "Will of Westminster, not all people". #RejoinEU #EU
"We must confront the reality that the botched Brexit deal significantly hurt our economy. You do not need to have a PhD in economics to know that erecting unnecessary trade barriers with your biggest trading partner will hurt growth and raise the cost of living. So one element of our economic renewal will be continuing to move towards a closer trading relationship with the EU. If we can get cheaper food, boost growth and create jobs by having a closer relationship with the EU, we should." Keir Starmer, 30 November 2025
Keir Starmer clearly recognises the damage Brexit continues to do to the UK economy, and the need to go further to repair the relationship with the EU.
Has he got the courage to put McSweeney and Glasman aside and do what needs to be done?

A lot can change in three years.
The worry many will have is that the University may start to change it's policies in anticipation even before a Reform government becomes a reality.
People need to be alive to the danger, we've seen what happened in the USA.
As @timothysnyder.bsky.social wrote in On Tyranny, the first lesson from the 20th century on resisting tyranny is "Do not obey in advance ".
Far too many Universities in the USA forgot this and quickly bent the knee to Trump.
Will the University of Cambridge take the same shameful path?

While the leadership of Universities like the University of Cambridge should be talking to all political parties, they should certainly not be "cozying up" to Reform UK.
Are they also talking with the Greens and Lib Dems, in the same way?

Sanctions and Ukrainian strikes are crippling the oil industry that Russia relies on to generate revenue to fund its war of aggression against Ukraine.
We must not fail Ukraine now.
Democracies must increase support for Ukraine and tighten sanctions on Russia.

📉 Russia’s largest oil producer, Rosneft, has reported a dramatic collapse in profits — earning just $3.5 billion in the first nine months of 2025, a staggering 70% drop compared to 2024.
Russia’s supposed “oil giant” now generates profits on scale of global coffee chains and fast-food franchises.

Also, Rubio is very keen to preempt European criticism of the large illegal military action the US appears to be about to launch against Venezuela.
The Maduro regime is illegitimate, corrupt and brutally authoritarian, but that does not justifies air strikes or invasion.

The US government is now using diplomats to actively stir up more anti-immigration sentiment in Europe, and turn more countries into corrupt autocracies like Orban's Hungary.
You have to wonder if Rubio is doing this for Trump, for Putin, or for both.

It’s clear to anyone paying attention that Farage won’t investigate the Russian infiltration of Reform.
The Prime Minister must step up and launch a national investigation.
Surely that should be "previously transported oil for Shell, Chevron and other Western shareholders".
Don't let the Russians spin this as an attack on Western assets, when it's an attack on the shadow oil industry that funds Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.
"Could the EU's frozen-assets plan destabilise European bond markets?"
The answer is a firm "No".
As experts, including those consulted for this article, explain, the impact of this plan to support Ukraine on bond markets would be minimal.
Enough excuses, get on with it!
