Unbelievably racist video, but of the 30 seconds, about half of it is claiming that Latinos (not specifically immigrants, even) are "too stupid" to speak English. English-only and English-superiority narratives are a bedrock of this regime's racism. They know nothing about how language works.

We are at the point in the honoring-Charlie-Kirk's-memory cycle when faculty are being fired for posting, without comment, Charlie Kirk's words. At the behest of politicians sworn to uphold the first amendment, and in public institutions covered by first amendment protections.

People notice gender mismatches ~600ms with serial presentation, but ~400ms with parallel presentation. The patterns are different for transparent nouns (aut-o rΓ‘pid-o) vs opaque (coche rΓ‘pid-o) and pseudomarked (moto rΓ‘pid-a) nouns! This is her first QP, and it opens lots of interesting puzzles

Maybe examples like 'the fake diamond'? 'This is a fake diamond' shouldn't entail 'This is a diamond'. But, to my ears 'this is a diamond that's fake' isn't as obviously-preposterous as 'Obama is a president that is former' does, so maybe my informant missed the point

02.09.2025 04:28 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Oh I think that's just a genuine structural ambiguity. No, I mean things like 'the former president', which should NOT be paraphrasable as 'the president that is former'. I remember trying to figure this out once but nominal tense made that specific example wonky

somali syntax is neat also, "cup of coffee" is a v-final subordinate clause:

koob bun ah wux-uu
cup coffee be-3Sg FOCUS-3Sg

ku kac-ayaa saddex dollar
in cost-3sg.Prog 3 dollar

IIRC you also have this for adjectives that aren't intersective too, right? One of my favorite quirks of Somali grammar
