Only a 5-minute walk from the Institute, our intern Aiko visited the National Gallery- Alexandros Soutsos Museum! This gallery is home to one of Greece’s most significant collections of modern art, with artworks from the post-Byzantine era to the 20th century.

This week our intern Aiko took a stroll through the gardens of the Byzantine and Christian Museum in Athens. Among the trees and quiet paths lie mosaics, reliefs, and ancient remains, making it the perfect place to spend an afternoon in nature.

Wyatt recently visited the Acrocorinth. This fortified acropolis of Ancient Corinth, built in the archaic period, was occupied until the 1800s. Currently the site has many trails, temples, mosques, and fortifications to see.

Wyatt's visit to Ancient Corinth took him to the Archaeological Museum and the Temple of Apollo. This site offered him a view of both Greek and Roman architecture, and the museum holds pottery & many beautiful statues.

Recently Wyatt’s climbed the Pnyx hill, which offers a beautiful view of the Acropolis. The site offers many other locations to see on its ascent, including the Prison of Socrates, Philopappos Monument, and more. #Philopappos #Pnyxhill #archaeology #Athens

Another temple Wyatt visited was that of Aphaia on Aegina, built 500-490 BCE on a site with cult activity from the Bronze Age. The patron goddess played a similar role to Artemis; later the temple was dedicated to Athena. #Greece #Aegina #temple #architecture #TempleofAphaia

Wyatt recently visited the island of Aegina and its archaeological museum. The temple of Apollo is known as the Kolona, due to the lone Doric column atop the cliff. Meanwhile the museum held pottery & statues found around the island.

One of Wyatt's favourite pastimes is visiting the National Garden, which hosts a wide variety of plants and flowers. The garden also includes a Roman bath house, Roman mosaics, a zoo, and a small koi pond.

During his trip to Thessaloniki, Wyatt visited the Heptapyrgion. He learned of the fortress’ history how it used older buildings in its construction, and how it was repurposed to be a prison in the 1890’s.#Heptapyrgion #Architecture #Thesaloniki #Byzantine

Last weekend, Wyatt visited the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki which demonstrates the day to day life of the Macedonian people, with artifacts like the clay beehive, Hellenistic statues and sarcophagus.

Last week, Wyatt visited the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion. This temple sits on a cliff, and offers a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape, the Aegean Sea, and a gorgeous view of the sunset.

Another site Wyatt has visited is Aristotle’s Lyceum. From 335 BCE this was Aristotle's school, where he would instruct students during walks. Today the site is open for the public and a lovely way to spend an afternoon. #Lyceumofaristotle #Aristotle #Athens #Greece #archaeology

At the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus Wyatt saw many steles, pottery and statues. Other points of interest were the detailed bronze statues of the gods, the Theatre of Zea, and large funerary lion statues.

Wyatt recently visited Delphi’s archaeological museum. There he saw architecture and votive offerings dedicated to Apollo and the oracle. Some highlights include bronze weapons and armour, and the statue of the sphinx.

During Wyatt’s Trip to the Argolid, he visited Nafplio's Archaeological Museum. The museum hosts a wide variety of artifacts, including the terracotta ceremonial masks found at Tiryns and the Mycenaean bronze armour from Dendra.

Last week, Wyatt Visited the Byzantine and Christian Museum. Some of the standouts to him were the marble slabs and religious icons. Additionally, Wyatt learned about the history of Iconoclasm in the Byzantine empire.

Last week, Wyatt visited the Museum of Cycladic Art, where he saw the evolution of Cycladic art from the Neolithic to the Hellenistic. There is currently a temporary exhibit on the societal role of women in the Cyclades depicted through art. #museumofCycladicart #Athens #Greece
