In my experience 9 times out of 10, whenever someone brings up Pterodactyls they are usually talking about Pteranodon.

Pterodactylus was a small pterosaur that lived in the Late Jurassic.

Pterodactyl is my prehistoric Fairydale. Which if you don’t know, is a book I loathe with my entire soul.

No, it’s not the same.

Yes it actually is that serious! And I’m tired of pretending that it’s not.

Pterodactyl isn’t short for Pterodactylus. (also two letters?? don’t piss me off)

Pterodactyl is a made up term that most people use when they are talking about Pterosaurs in general.

Tonight’s fact is to simply remind everyone that Pterosaurs are in fact, not dinosaurs.

And if you’ve been here for a while, I’m sure you can guess where this going.

Pterodactyls were not real.

There is no classified species known as Pterodactyl.

There is however Pterodactylus.

Having a lot of books is so fun until it’s time to clean and dust my bookshelves/books.

I love Triceratops! They are definitely iconic dinosaurs!

They were also one of the last dinosaurs to evolve before the mass extinction. Which means they also lived closer in time to us than Stegosaurus.

Unfortunately we haven’t found a complete specimen yet, and have to use other ankylosaurids to fill in the gaps for us.

Anyway, I love them very much🙂‍↕️

See it was covered in osteoderms (thick, bony plates) that it used as defense against predators. It even had armored eyelids!!

It also had its large tail club that it would swing around with enough force to break bones!

Possibly even break a T. rex leg, which a T. rex with a bum leg = dead.

Ankylosaurus, aka my personal favorite dinosaur (don’t tell the others).

They lived during the Late Cretaceous in what is now North America.

They are often called the “living tank” by paleontologists for how well armored it was.

Life construction of what Haolong dongi woukd have looked like. It has spikes of various sizes all over its body except for it tail. It’s tail shows over lapping scales.

The extremely well preserved fossil of a juvenile Haolong dongi.

Do you have any idea how insane it is that these were on an Iguanodontian??

Now while most of its body was covered in these spikes, it’s tail had large overlapping scales on it.

And because it’s a juvenile we don’t know how big adults were, or if they kept the spikes into adulthood.

And dongi, which honors Chinese paleontologist Dong Zhiming.

It is known from a single juvenile fossil that is about about 2.4 meters (8ft) long.

Now that’s all really cool but whats even cooler?

It was covered in all these various spikes that are distinct from both quills and feathers!!

A new dinosaur has just dropped.

Haolong dongi.

It was an Iguanodontian that lived during the Early Cretaceous in what is now China.

It’s name means comes from the word Haolong, which means ‘spiny dragon’.

Pterodactyl is an informal name that most people use to describe pterosaurs as a whole a lot of the time.

It’s just a pet peeve of mine 😅

I have done many rants over this, because it IS the serious to me lmao.
