Always enjoy these reports, Lewis. This one shows the value of a good local candidate. I'm sure we often miss out on good candidates within communities who (unlike Grauberg) are outside the party system. Smart parties would do well to make room for them, but would need to allow some independence.

I hadn't thought of that. I guess racism often misuses language, and it can be quite varied. But I'd presumed this was part of the old attitude of British racism which assumed all foreigners were inferior, including Spaniards. (There's probably some evidence for this at European soccer matches.)

Was he enthusiastically pro-Trump, ignoring all the downsides? Or reluctantly pro-Trump, recognising the downsides but also seeing some positives compared with the Democratic opposition? (And more importantly, are you enjoying Botswana? Interesting choice of destination!)

Trumpism is only half of America. We shouldn't forget the other half. In the medium term, the real challenge is to find ways to bring back those who voted for Trump reluctantly. They need to be persuaded that the threat to democracy and the rule of law is the main issue now.

There are two big questions. How can Europe take more responsibility for its own security? Everyone's asking that. But also important: What can Europe do to strengthen its own democratic values and encourage the American people not to slide further away from them? (Abuse is not an effective answer!)

Also, this is the guy who stopped WW2. Not.

Did some research (asked a daughter). Seems local (Westminster) and/or younger kids (teens, early twenties) mean Oxford St, Soho, Chinatown, Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Sq, Trafalgar Sq. And maybe Covent Garden. But for older young people, living further away, Central can mean a much wider area.

I find Psalm 37 helps. Hard (and wrong) to ignore what's going on in the world. But global decision making is above our pay grade. On the other hand, writing about borders (in your case) is bang on. Brings enlightenment and pleasure, your way of making a difference. Hope there'll be more soon!
