For years conservatives derided college kids as liberal snowflakes who need safe spaces, who couldn’t handle the real world, and would literally melt when met with conflict. Seeing the anti-genocide students put their lives on the line makes it clear that characterizing them as weak and fragile was just a way to rob them of their power. Now that their power is clear, universities are trying to shut them down, and cops are beating the shit out of them. You don’t beat the shit out of snowflakes.

I try to remember that whenever we talk about how much of a fucked up horror show the world is, what we mean is that the world is full of good people being wronged and beauty being destroyed, that we risk losing all of it—not a denial of the good in the world but its affirmation.

So so so much of the panic around trans kids is centered in the fact that parents struggle with recognizing their kid has an interior life. It denies trans kids the closet and autonomy, and positions "reality" as "things are only real when I am made aware of them" which is fundamentally selfish.
