Actually not the first. Attorney Troy Doucet, founder of AI.Law, filed an AI written complaint in the SD of Ohio back in March 2024. Doucet v. Revco Solutions, Inc., 2:24-cv-01367, (S.D. Ohio). The company posted a story about it on their blog: www.ai.law/blog/ai-laws...

Reason:
Ever since a concussion last year, I have issues looking at screens for long periods of time. I want something to assist with digital commenting on student papers. I do not want to give the students audio files, however. Also need FERPA compliant app.

Has anyone ran into an annotation/note-taking app where you can:
1. Load a PDF/Word doc,
2. Click on a place where you want to add a comment
3. Dictate a comment
4. Your words are then converted to text,
5. You can export the doc with traditional text comments

There are several practice management companies integrating AI to help with these types of issues. I have not played with them yet, but might be worth looking at. Or use document automation software. Not everything has to be GenAI.

I admit the legal companies that were founded around law (E.g. Lexis, Westlaw, etc.) have much better terms for their AI products since they understand (and often share) our ethical obligations.

I forgot that I was going to share this prompt with you. I had my students run an earlier assignment through chatgpt with this. We then looked at one that I ran and talked about how it was changing statutory language & terms of art, but helped elsewhere. Use with careful thought was the lesson.

If we don't teach it, they will use it anyway, but without the proper understanding of it and recommended guardrails. Or a vendor will teach it, & the students will not know enough to question some statements.

I also pointed out that our law school honor code requires explicit professor permission.

Half my students were terrified of AI and half were already using it. We had a chat at the beginning that started with the NYT article re: Mata and why they need to learn the skills themselves. At the end of the semester we are covering AI again about how it can be used ethically and responsibly 1/2

Their timing is telling.

Bribing myself - I am officially allowed to open the cheese advent calendar from Sam's when I finish grading memo drafts (who cares if it is early! It is my bribe). Love teaching - hate grading...
