Time to draw my conclusions: I am not switching from Twitter/X to Bluesky: I am retiring from social media altogether. And I hope everybody who wants to keep their thoughts sane, does the same. Do not let your thoughts get infected by uncurated drivel from just anybody with an opinion.

The value that any of these social networks bring nowadays is non-existent or negative. In the beginning there were well-intented people sharing thought, so I was positive, but I was naive: I should have known that such a place attracts reactionaries, pundits, trolls and just plain old dirty ads.

Without thought, truthseeking and an effort to stay objective most of these opinions bring no value to the table, only chaos and people being mislead. Luckily they were mostly private until Hyves, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

When I started with social media, about 25 years ago, I thought it was a good thing that many new people got the freedom to express themselves. A democatization of media, so to say. I must admit I was wrong. Most private opinions should just stay that: private.

I should add this still is the case in 2025 as well..

If a check needs to be done, it needs to be done on the id card anyway, because everybody can choose any name on any ticket without any check. But the actual check that would be useful (id card check) is not done at all.. sigh... Bureaucracy

Why oh why in 2024 is it still a requirement that the name on a airline ticket is exactly the same as on your id card or passport and otherwise a 'security issue' and reason for bouncing you at the gate? Who thinks this will actually prevent anything?

I think it is certainly possible, but just don't mistake it for meaning: I know how to work with every detail of every possible part of any tech stack. That is not possible neither necessary. My guess is that is the misunderstanding.

I'm open to hearing other views on this.

Note that this is different from depending on foreign-origin hardware that is owned and administered by these governments themselves. Extra note: to be able to fully administer them, you should be curating every change / connection / update that takes place and be fully aware of what's done and why.

Ok, let's see if this works: I am of the opinion that Dutch and other european governments should not depend on foreignly owned and administered tech stacks. It is a dependency that gives too much leverage to foreign actors. For example: depending on American tech clouds.

I am wondering if the damage of years of twitter neglect can be undone. I remember having meaningful conversations on twitter, more than 10 years ago. Is that going to come back or did I change too much in the meantime?
