Inside a Dark Space by MJ James is an own-voice sci-fi book with fantastic autism rep. I love how it portrays the space that people still hold for each other to learn about & accommodate each other, even when the world is in a much rougher place. It is hopeful amidst the bleak.

Also in true Chicago fashion, it will be back in the 60s by this weekend 😅

Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. It is a beautiful and painful exploration of womanhood, especially Black womanhood, gender roles, loss of self, and ultimately liberation, but not without cost. Amazing imagery and symbolism, and a story that sticks with you.

Sister Outsider by Audre Lorde, and Aristotle & Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. The explorations of queerness as not simply attraction, but a broader experience, born within broader marginalization, is nuanced, gorgeous, & visceral in both.

My platform is a lil too small for a successful r*ffle, so I'm instead committing to donate 30% of my royalties to Rogers Park FNB until SNAP benefits resume. Hopefully someday I can make a longer term d*nati*n commitment. I'll also keep the 🔗s for both orgs in my b/*/o for direct d*nations.

My parents didn't closely monitor what I read growing up, though they kept general tabs on it. This suited me well, because freedom, but it did lead to me reading some books a bit young, like Love Story. 😬

I have two. The traditional children's poet I loved the most was Shel Silverstein. His poetry books were accessible and lovely. My non traditional fav was Edward Gorey. I've always appreciated dark humor, and his The Gashlycrumb Tinies: Alphabet of Death was the best.

It wasn't a kid's book, exactly, but I was -obsessed- with ancient Egyptian history and artifacts, so my fav non-fiction book as a kid was this King Tut book 😄 My spouse apparently had it as well. Definitely a part of my obsession with worlds other than my own.
