Plus la pêche s’industrialise, plus elle contribue au changement climatique.

C’est ce qui ressort du bilan carbone de la pêche française mis au point par Bloom et le Shift Project, qui ont calculé l’empreinte carbone du secteur en France.

1. In the wake on Mamdani’s win, we’ll see a lot more far right anti-urban sentiment. Here’s a thread on its roots and evolution.

The idea that the city is evil and corrupt, and the countryside innocent and pure, goes back a long way: to Theocritus in Alexandria, and to the Old Testament. 🧵

Vibrant underwater photograph of a healthy coral reef ecosystem showing rich biodiversity. The scene features pink and white coral formations with multiple species of tropical fish, including yellow butterflyfish, royal angelfish with blue and yellow stripes, and bright yellow butterfly fish. A sea turtle swims in the upper right corner. Red starfish are visible on the coral, and schools of smaller fish in blue, red, and yellow colors swim throughout. The water is a clear, bright blue, and the coral shows various textures and shapes, from branching to rounded formations. The image captures the complex interactions and diversity of a thriving coral reef community.

Approximately 1/3 of reef-building coral species are at high risk of extinction. 🪸 The loss of coral reefs could impact nearly 1 billion people who depend on them for food, medicine, storm protection, and livelihoods.

A screenshot of the most observed ctenophores page on iNaturalist it shows that there are 12,008 ctenophore observations across 70 species, with over 1500 identifiers and over 6000 observers. There is a grid of the 15 top observed ctenophores - the most observed having just under 1900 observations and the 15th most under 90. They represent a variety of ctenophore body forms, from the lobate Mnemiopsis that is observed most to cydippids like the two Pleurobrachia species that take spots 2 and 3, as well as Beroids and even benthic ctenos.

April 10th will be #CtenophoreDay for folks using the MM-DD date format… I’d love if we could get a bunch of cteno observations on @inaturalist.bsky.social that day. Near a dock? Go take a look next Saturday! Tell your friends!

What’s Up With Peter Thiel’s Obsession With the Antichrist? The tech mogul is amping up his apocalyptic rhetoric—and adding a dangerous dose of extremism into the already-fraught culture war.

Gil Duran: When you see right-wing figures using the language of demons, Antichrists and apocalypse to attack their opponents, remember what you’re seeing. It's a deliberate effort to remake politics and holy war—a tactic that usually ends in violence.

Figure 1.7 illustrates the extent to which countries that spend more on health have better health outcomes.
There is a clear positive association between health spending per capita and life expectancy at birth (Figure 1.7). Among the
38 OECD countries, 18 spend more and have higher life expectancy than the OECD average (top right quadrant). A further
11 countries spend less and have lower life expectancy than the OECD average (bottom left quadrant).
Of particular interest are countries that deviate from this basic relationship. Eight countries spend less than the OECD average
but achieve higher life expectancy overall (top left quadrant). This may indicate relatively good value for money of health systems,
notwithstanding the fact that many other factors also have an impact on health outcomes. These eight countries are Korea, Spain,
Italy, Israel, Portugal, Chile, Costa Rica and Slovenia. The only country in the bottom right quadrant is the United States, with
much higher spending than all other OECD countries but lower life expectancy than the OECD average.

Check out this scatterplot of health spending per capita (x axis) & life expectancy (y axis) in OECD countries (lines = averages).

The United States sits alone in the bottom right area due to its very high spending rate and below-average life expectancy.

Even among pages that existed in 2021, 22% no longer accessible just two years later. This is often because individual page was deleted or removed on otherwise functional website.
