Currently looking for a proverbial 'needle in a haystack' that is Acalyptris platani on London Plane. Shedloads of the Phyllonorycter platani, however. Putney Heath, SW London (VC17). #MothsMatter

I would say "typical" based on current knowledge. However, yes, there will be intermediates that will cause confusion, plus the usual wear-and-tear which can disguise the features.

Ta! From these images the forewing apex differences look fairly obvious when choosing candidates. The Oak was wild-caught and the Spiny was bred through from wild-caught specimens.

If anyone takes Watsonalla binaria/uncinula (Oak/Spiny Hook-tip) from now, please check with your County Recorder if they wish specimens to be retained for microscopic examination (at the discretion of the recorder) and confirmation.

It could also be Endothenia marginana (the one with the 'anal comb', so does need checking.

Stigmella basiguttella (Shoulder-spot Dot) on Quercus robor (Oak), 30 Oct 2025, Putney Heath, SW London (VC17) - 2nd site record (1st record 2003). Inspired by Trevor Pendleton's YouTube channel www.youtube.com/watch?v=msE-.... #MothsMatter

Indeed, while you still have it. These Geometrid moths can be extremely flighty and difficult to deal with. I and others use just enough CO2 to knock them outdor about 30 seconds, then while they're quiet, gently move the forewing out of the way. They soon recover.

I'm afraid I can't confirm it from this image, it's just too blurred for me.

Some forms of Red-green Carpet show no red shading at all. As @sj84turner.bsky.social says, check the hindwing (upperside). πŸ‘

A couple of more-than-welcome visitors overnight 28 Oct 2025, Putney Heath, SW London (VC17): A 2nd site record of Dryobota labecula (Oak Rustic) and a presumed partial 2nd generation Eilema griseola (Dingy Footman). #MothsMatter

Microscopic examination only to get the species I'm afraid.

A handheld 10x lens is invaluable for checking these if microscopes aren't available.
