Trump teaming up with Israel on this makes it impossible to ignore how disastrous Biden’s β€œbear hug” policy was in the moment, through the election, and even moreso in hindsight.

i’m tired of every paper (even critical ones) on societal impact of AI starting by both-siding the β€œbenefits” and risks/harms of AI

in academia, i would like us to arrive at a collective reckoning that we don’t need to play both sides. it's totally legit to clearly state just the harms. period

INBOX: @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social dropped a 90s sitcom-themed video endorsement of @bradlander.bsky.social, specifically calling out AIPAC's influence:

Resilience, ridicule guarantee hate group’s flop at D.C. anti-abortion march When 120 white nationalist Patriot Front members descended on Washington, D.C., they were met by counterdemonstrators and clown music.

NEW, from me: I talked to people who shut down Patriot Front's rally in D.C. last month.

Counter-demonstrators made it impossible for PF to produce propaganda and recruit at the March for Life rally. The clown music set the tone.

It's not a time for speeches or hand-wringing but for collective action at the state level. This will not end with Minnesota.

Faculty have incentive to invest most of their mentoring in students who they perceive as needing little help to succeed in "elite" academia, because the less help their students need, the more energy they can devote to their research (and the more their students can contribute to their work). 3/

Take "elite" academia's culture of cruelty, which stems from the fact that faculty rewards for research far exceed those for teaching/mentoring, especially at the PhD level where students don't pay tuition. In that context, faculty have incentive to be sh*tty mentors, except to a few "winners." 2/

Lawrence Summers Will Resign From Harvard After Epstein Revelations

I'm glad to see accountability for academia's bad apples. But I also hope that resignations like this one won't be the end of the story. Because we still need to reckon with how the structures and cultures in "elite" academia have created ripe conditions for rot. 1/🧡

"That's illegal" is very helpful. It gives people a reason to call their congresspeople and demand it be reversed.

"To echo Malcolm X, these monstrosities should be stopped by any means necessary," writes @willbunch.bsky.social about the Trump regime's plans for a concentration camp network as part of its mass deportation infrastructure, something ICE’s Todd Lyons likened to "[Amazon] Prime, but w/human beings.”

As strike deadline looms, politicians and faculty offer support to graduate student union If a strike is called, graduate workers would begin picketing at 9 a.m. next Tuesday.

"As Penn’s graduate student union finalizes preparations for a potential strike on Feb. 17, support from local politicians, faculty members, and undergraduate students has intensified."

I have been pleasantly surprised to hear people openly talking about the end of institutional life as we know it (it’s been over. We’ve been living and working in zombie institutions for three decades now) and instead of collapsing at the thought they’re like okay let’s rebuild but better. More.

SAVE Act aka β€œshow your papers” law

If you don’t have a passport or access to your birth certificate, you’re not alone. About 21 mill Americans could be blocked from voting, just like you.

Why are Trump and Republicans pushing this? Because they do better when fewer people vote.

Nothing is ever what he says it is!

Republicans are pushing the SAVE America Act to choke off the vote. Passports to register. National photo ID to vote. Database purges to wipe out voters. Millions of citizens silenced so the GOP can cling to power. We see it. We stop it.

Could you have ever imagined the sheer ignorance, disinformation, and hate of this statement came from our own govt?
This is some serious brown shirt shit. They’re trying to convince you that immigrants are why housing is too expensive. It’s not. Seek truth.

The Americans Who Saw All This Comingβ€”but Were Ignored and Maligned Call them the Cassandras: the peopleβ€”mostly not white and maleβ€”who smelled the fascism all over Trump from jump street. Why were they β€œalarmists,” and how did β€œanti-alarmism” become cool?

I’ed love to see @theatlantic.com run someone like @polphilpod.bsky.socialβ€˜s article on the people who were *correct* about the dangers of rising fascism but laughed at. Our elite media rewards cautious (and wrong) pundits and shuns us folks who were right.

And why should we continue to listen to a pundit who was wrong about the most important questions? Give that space to someone who was correct, and shunned or considered β€œunserious” by the pundit who is again profiting from being wrong.
