A hand-crocheted woolen throw laid out flat on a bed. Squares of rustic red, tan, gray, brown, and ivory yarn are joined together to form a larger pattern, spreading out like a medallion from a white cross at the center surrounded by dark brown toward a white border and dark corners, edged in tan, rust red, and light gray. Made in Princeton, NJ (1991). Photographed in Washington, DC (2022)

Quite a project. Took me a long time to make. But it’s held up well. The design was called Log Cabin, I think. Not perfect but warm & cozy, especially during the pandemic.🧶

A sculpture of a smooth-faced young man shouldering a heavy load. His head is turned sideways, his chest bare, his knees braced as he takes the base of a scrolled column on his upper back, a thin cloth draped over his shoulder to protect his skin from the stone. The expression on his youthful face is one of forbearance. The bronze is called ‘Andiron with Figure of Mars’ by Tiziano Aspetti (1565). National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (July 2022)

Blow-up of a large wind-blown sunflower, with Rodin’s sculpture ‘The Burghers of Calais’ (1869) placed in the dark-brown center of the flower along with the young Asian woman on her cell phone just below the good citizens of Calais, who, in 1347, offered themselves as hostages to the King of England to end his siege of their city—but she is oblivious to all that, perched on the yellow sunflower petals in her chic black jacket and fitted pants. The sunflower is a tribute to Ukraine, besieged by Russia since 2014; the sculpture commemorates the Hundred Years' War between the English and the French. (Photomontage created: May 27, 2025; Washington, DC)

It’s pretty intense, alright! I’m surprised it won the Booker. But then the Booker has gone off the rails. Used to be such a good predictor of really great writers if not books! I haven’t liked any prizewinners lately. I’m reading Demon Copperhead, & admiring it more than liking it. #bluebrewbooks

Morning, Susan! Hope you had a good Thanksgiving🦃 Speaking of food, I’d say The Vegetarian made me squeamish. While I felt sorry for her, the way the story was told (3 perspectives) had a distancing effect… To me, the most interesting thing about the book was the glimpse into modern Korean society.

Good luck with Lessons in Chemistry, one of my “dnf” books from last year. Billed as laugh-out-loud funny, but more like laughable if you ask me. A brilliant chemist who’s clueless yet prone to lecturing everyone with 20/20 hindsight even tho’ this is supposed to be the 1950s… Anyway, safe travels!🛩️

A mallard-duck couple float on the gray-green surface of a flat pool of water, where flames burn in the middle of the fountain honoring wounded soldiers. The drab-brown female is sharply eying her emerald-headed mate as he passes by as if on patrol. In the background, a gray-haired man in a black wheelchair is talking to a couple of tourists. Glad you ended up liking the Stewart book. The Lost Pianos of Siberia sounds intriguing. One of the more memorable books I ever read set in Siberia was Lost in the Taiga. About a family hiding out from the Czar when they’re discovered by modern-day scientist doing geological surveys. #devonbookhour

Not yet. I read Spring awhile ago. I found it exquisite yet maddening. Exquisite because of the writing. Maddening because of its inconclusiveness. James & Katherine drift around like "half-abstract beings" in spring, vaguely uneasy about how things stand, neither willing to do much about it. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️

Golden yellow ginkgo trees are reflected in a still, flat pool of water. A glass wall runs between the two rows of trees, inset with panels showing enlarged black and white combat photos from the Vietnam War. One in the middle is of three soldiers carrying a wounded soldier on a stretcher. The memorial celebrates men and women who may be broken in body – but never in spirit. The mix of literary high-brow & cultural low-brow. The narrative switch-ups from 1st person confession to 3rd person observation. The tension between real & fake—“Where does the character end and the self begin?” Margo is an unwed mother. Hence the money issues. Amusing, surprising, and endearing.🅰 ️
