If one is perfectly candid, one is seldom pleased by the answer to the question, "What, if anything, would putting this out into the universe add to the sum total of human delight and enlightenment?"

a movie poster for sunset boulevard shows a woman standing in front of a crowd Alt: The closing tableau of the film SUNSET BOULEVARD. Norma Desmond, a washed up silent film actress obviously in a state of delusional mania is posing for an imaginary film camera as she says "Mr Demille, I'm ready for my close up" as two sad men look on in pity.

Pleasurably exhausted by the #AucklandFilmSociety opening night screening of RUN LOLA RUN. Though somewhat chastened by the thought that unlike much of the pleasingly crowded house, I'm old enough to have seen it the first time around in 1998. #FilmSky #MovieSky

Sure, but both these things can be true:

1) Abuse victims process their trauma in ways that can be weird and profoundly unhealthy, and not just for themselves.

2) That makes the rest of us no less responsible for NOT perpetuating cycles of abuse.

THIS - and let's be brutally real, abusers who prey on the bottom of the food chain in desperately insecure high churn industries like hospitality DGAF about the professional development of their victims. No matter how either party rationalizes it.

Good question - back in the Civil War, you could literally buy your way out of conscription by hiring someone to take your place. Or sending enough of your slaves off to war. I'm sure Trump would revive the practice for the same price low low price as a Trump pardon.

Kick it old school - you can buy your way out of the Trump draft for the same low low price as a Trump pardon.

I know burring history books is more popular than reading them in the United States of Amnesia, but nobody in the White House has heard of the anti-conscription riots during the Civil War?

I guess if your one aim in political life in reversing Reconstruction and the end of chattel slavery its only a matter of time before you got to Civil War-era style draft riots.

Probably not the greatest lie The Devil ever told, but definitely Top 5:

The ownership and incompetent operation of a vehicle with an internal combustion engine is a fundamental and inalienable human right.

Every single professional journalist who uses the phrases β€œDepartment of War” or β€œSecretary of War” without scare quotes should be lined up on a public viewing stage and bopped on the head with a giant inflatable hammer that says DUMB DUMB on the handle and makes fart sounds.

Yes, The louder you shout "I'm fine, nothing is bothering me" the less convincing the act. Every time.

The only thing I miss about the other place is the feature where you had to check a box before posting - around 60% of the time was a useful prompt to check for typos or decide "On first throughts, putting that out in the universe will not end well."

Apart from being a condescending arsehole pandering to bigotts, Docter is just lying. Has this prick seen any of his movies driven by the trauma, anxiety and physical peril of it's audience-surrogate protagonists? Smells like akward conversation fuel to me, #FilmSky #MovieSky

Interesting and usefully provocative discussion - though I'm not sure the Holocaust analogy was particularly useful on either historical or literary grounds.

If its relevant to your interests, find on You Tube the South Bank Show of Francis Bacon. A large chunk of it is obviously skilfully edited from a liquid lunch where Melvin Bragg ended up in a drunken coma under the table. (Bacon was a notoriously thirsty queen.)

And I don't think he's wrong - like P.D. James' THE CHILDREN OF MEN, it is very bad science fiction. But its very bad critical reading to scold a book for not achieving what it isn't even trying to attempt. #BookSky

Listening to the latest Coode Street Podcast (a fave of mine), where I think it's fair to say co-host Jonathan Strahan has... issues with Kazuo Ishiguro's NEVER LET ME GO. Argued precisely and coherently. But he's doing something here that gets on my tits...

I get the appeal of small target electoral politics, but Starmer tried to make a virtue of believing in absolutely nothing detectable to the unaided eye and it turned out that completely failed to either read the room or meet the moment.
