Testing whether image posting is working for me yet. Just some bug miniatures I painted recently (terrain is pre-painted Dwarven Forge).

When I first learned fencing, it was from a retired French WW2 cavalry officer. He would hold a foil like that and rap it on the floor to provide a rhythm for our exercises, exactly like the classic ballet instructor rapping their cane. That is what the image makes me think of. Classically trained.

I do a lot of writing in the back of my head. Kind of ponder it in the shower, while driving, etc. But I'll also toss a couple of notes into a tab in Notepad++ and gradually fill them in, to avoid forgetting, before eventually fully developing the text. This goes for rules and other writing too.

I like crunch! That said, #Rolemaster had a lot and, while some parts really added something to the narrative, other parts didn't. That's why we cut those parts in the new edition! No more BAR, no more RR table. Also balanced things out better. But you still have freedom to define your character.

LARP writing is very good for the lesson that different people are playing for different reasons and different styles. For TTRPG I'm writing for a bigger total audience, but with a LARP I have a lot more people at my "table". The LARP rules also need to lean less on GM rulings, so clarity too.

I think it would work if I had about three times the wall space. Maybe I could convert my office into a labyrinth of narrow corridors. :)

No, not really.

I find myself way more confused about using Bluesky, personally. I can never figure out how conversations are structured here. In Discord it's just a bunch of posts in chronological order.

It's all just points unless 1) different types of injuries affect your activity so you need to adjust your combat tactics based on the wounds you've taken, and 2) it takes more than a generic healing spell to fix those injuries. That's inherently more complex, but a reason I prefer #Rolemaster.

I ran a bunch of Cthulhupunk using Night City, but in GURPS. Good times. When the Cyberpunk CRPG came out, seeing the pictures from it really made me feel like I was seeing photos from a place I used to live.

I'm expecting to release the Character Companion for the new edition of #Rolemaster. It's already written and edited but it will be 2025 by the time art and layout are done.

Might be other things too but that one's pretty certain.

Best way to become an artist is to just keep making art. At some point you realize something happened along the way.

Helicopter parents the RPG?

Maybe make the moral of the game that everything would have worked out fine if they hadn't been meddling in the first place.

Sorry, no. :) But that said, I bet you have some games you've never played. Make 2025 your catch-up year. If you paid for them in the past, they are free for you now.

Well in fairness it took us that long (longer actually) to release the new version. ;)

Not sure why I stumbled over the post in that case but whatever...

Having two projects is very efficient. One of them goes noplace, but the other one is what you do to procrastinate, and that's very productive.

Or did you mean multiple projects you want to actually complete? Completion requires that one project gets full attention at least for a while.

As a game designer *especially*. You need to be experimenting with rules to figure out what works.

But there are definitely people playing the game I worked on who just want to know exactly what is meant by the rules so they can follow them religiously. Honestly, it's a little odd.

I like playing, but I also like GMing. I'm happy to keep doing it. Except I wish that one game I was playing would start back up because I was having a lot of fun with that one character....

I'm kind of fighting right now with the decision about how much narrative vs how much sandbox. Do I list a set of encounters, or do I list a bunch of people and leave it to the GM to decide how best to make use of them?

Big narrative beats need to be clear (maybe with alts), little stuff less so.

Face it, humans are just lazy. That's why they sleep so much!

03.12.2024 22:41 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

It just happens, you know, that some of the human stand-ins are plants, etc. :)

Being the species that looks exactly like humans means they are kind of the low-effort species (since this is LARP and not ttrpg), so reckless is actually a great fit.

03.12.2024 22:32 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

It's sort of hope-punk with elements of SF and fantasy. There are six species that make up the PCs' nation (5 playable), an ordered community structured civilization surrounded by chaos. I think collectively they are "humans" surrounded by things that are in various ways "alien."

I'm firmly in the percentile camp. Two dice!

Dice pools are fun to roll though.

And I cited an example as a reply to that original post.

I certainly don't love how original D&D treated non-human player races, and it seems like a weird thing for the OSR movement to try to preserve.

That said, Sotiris's question was about games that break that assumption. Which is one way (not the only) to escape that trope.

03.12.2024 21:58 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The LARPs that I play has their "human" species (they aren't called human, but the one with no makeup/prosthetic requirement) described as "headstrong, innovative, and intrepid." They have a reputation for being reckless. It's deliberate that they are not the norm, and not the majority species.

03.12.2024 21:50 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

The fundamental theme of the cyberpunk genre is dehumanization. Soooo.... at its core, it's not warm and fuzzy.

03.12.2024 02:30 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I don't think I agree about graphics, but this was a fun read. It's totally not my style of play, but one of the earliest minimal-rules narrative driven games. Still have my copy in the box with the deck of cards.
