I don't think the Epstein list is going to amount to anything. Then again, in 1973, I thought Watergate would just blow over.
17.07.2025 13:48 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'd like to remind everyone clamoring for the Epstein files to be opened that in the 70s we all wanted to hear Nixon's Watergate tapes and nothing ever came of that.
Oh, wait...
How did that work out, by the way?

"MANY people in this country are still of the erroneous
opinion that Fascism constitutes an ill-supported
tyranny of which Benito Mussolini is the tyrant.
Fascism is rather a National Discipline, certainly at
present severe, but open to modification under changed
and easier conditions.
I've done a little digging on Fascism in the 1920s. There were plenty outside Italy who thought it was a great thing. This is the introduction to the book The Keystone of Fascism by C.W. Cresswell, 1929.

11.06.2025 21:28 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I started teaching in the '80s. At one point, I had an older colleague who was very set in their ways. At one point, I commented that they were "preparing students for the '90s... The 1890s."
Too many teachers are still doing that.
I just finished my 40th year of college-level teaching. I can't believe that I am STILL dealing with people who
*can't follow simple directions
*don't respond in a timely manner (or at all!)
*expect ME to take care of everything for them
*don't want to learn
Thank goodness retirement is in sight.

Pretty prophetic...
Whenever I hear some idiot politician say, "We need to run education like a business!", my thought is always, "What business? Enron? Adelphia, Blockbuster?"
About the damned stupidest thing ever.
The same is ALREADY happening in state universities in Florida, and Texas will not be far behind.
29.05.2025 15:15 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0In a conversation with the chair, I said, "If you have that reputation, you WILL get good, young faculty. They will also leave as soon as the opportunity arises."
I was gone after three years.
I got my first full-time teaching position in the '80s. The Department had a reputation for not granting tenure. (Indeed, I got my position because my predecessor had been denied tenure.)

I was reminded of that today.

Years ago, I was a member of an oral exam panel. As we asked the student questions, they just looked at us like anders in the headlights." We asked questions with really obvious answers. Nothing. Tried to lead the student to say ANYTHING. Nope. 1/2
