The issue with reducing the LCA to one metric is that it makes the options seem equivalent, but they are not.

In the same way that we moved away from CFCs because they were degrading the ozone layer, we need to move away from processes that use heavy metals. No longevity justifies their use.

This is mainly because conventional leather production involves dangerous and toxic chemicals (including heavy metals) that prevent leather from rotting, but contribute to pollution not only during its production but after it is disposed as well.

Plus it uses far more water than other alternatives

That is fair, but the paper that I quoted includes a cradle-to-grave life-cycle assessment (LCA), which is the gold-standard to evaluate the environmental impact of a material. And in total impact, leather is still several times worse than alternatives like polyurethane.

There are good alternatives out there! But of course they tend not to be the cheapest options. 5 years ago I bought my first pair of faux-leather formal shoes (from Vincente Verde), and I still use them to this day.

We could make durable plastic-based products that have similar properties to leather, or we can make bio-based materials that are sustainable (if less durable).

But we cannot have both at the same time without involving animal suffering and toxic processes involved with leather production.

Alternatives are certainly not perfect. But that is because they are proposed as a more sustainable option than leather. That means (necessarily) that the durability will be lower, because we want them to degrade over time.

Leather isn't as biodegradable, and it requires animal suffering.

To make leather, a massive amount of water is needed. The process exposes people to heavy metals (like chromium), releases tannins into the environment, and in the end it makes a product that is not as biodegradable as other alternatives.

Hi there! It is a good point to question the potential environmental impacts of alternatives.

However, overall, leather is one of the least environmentally friendly materials: not only because it comes from cows, but also because of the toxins needed to treat it and make it durable.
