The biggest mistake schools and franchises make is assuming that because it worked elsewhere it will definitely work here. That because they had success, they must have run a tight, professional ship. It happens all the time. It will happen again.

Summary of the softball pitching mechanics literature:

1. Have strong glutes
2. More force production= faster pitches
3. If the legs are weak, the shoulder compensates

.....thanks.

I'm working with my college's softball team on player development and you'd be surprised how little research there is on softball pitching mechanics.

I fully expected this play to end very Jags-like but absolutely no one could have predicted how simultaneously Jags-y and unJags-y it ultimately went.

Biomechanical analyses in baseball/softball are extremely important. But there is no such thing as "perfect mechanics." There are general guidelines and reference points but the key for athlete success is combining mechanics and motor preferences.

Inside how the Dodgers fixed Roki Sasaki -- and possibly saved their World Series repeat hopes After a disastrous MLB debut, L.A.'s new ninth-inning man has unleashed jaw-dropping stuff in October. Here's what fueled the sudden turnaround.

PJ Fleck gets a lot of flack for being corny, but he's a very successful football coach. The research says that keeping things positive and in perspective drives athlete performance, even among athletes who claim to want critical, negative feedback (they don't, actually).

Gophers got smoked 42-3 against the best team in the nation. I think this answer is illustrative of why PJ Fleck has found success everywhere he's gone. Many coaches would respond with extreme disappointment. Fleck, responded with positivity.

They also:

-Have their athletes focus on external cues (i.e. the defense, the rim, etc) rather than internal (i.e. how their legs feel)
-Provide positive feedback and more feedback on what the athletes did correctly versus what they did wrong

You'd be surprised how many coaches don't do this.

The coaches who are best at developing their athletes employ significant randomness in their practices. Randomness mimics the competition environment.

I asked Cathy Engelbert pregame about how the #WNBA needs to be prepared to address its own injury epidemic.

Cc to @seehafer.bsky.social and his injury data base @theixbasketball.bsky.social. Here’s part of her answer.

The reporters in the room for Commissioner Engelbert's press conference tonight deserve a ton of kudos. That was journalism. That was asking tough questions and pressing for answers. Those who want to be journalists covering the league should take note about how it's done.

04.10.2025 00:58 β€” πŸ‘ 19    πŸ” 3    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

While not totally satisfied with the answer, I was heartened by Commissioner Engelbert implying that injuries would be looked at as a component of the new task force the league is developing. It's a step in the right direction, but I'll hold judgement until we hear their findings.
