Down at Vancouver Provincial Court this morning, where Lapu Lapu Day festival massacre suspect Kai-Ji Lo will appear at a hearing to determine whether he is fit to stand trial.
First up, however, a consortium of media outlets are challenging the publication ban.

Park Board Chair Christensen has ruled that it “does not qualify as urgent business,” thus it will not be heard tonight.
Christensen moved it to the next meeting … after the pool is closed for the summer.
Howard chose to withdraw her motion.
Park Board Cllr. Howard has moved to introduce a motion to end the COVID-era reservation system at Kits Pool.
She argued that it was “urgent business” given the fact that this is the board’s last meeting until September.
Park Board Cllr. Virdi has introduced a motion to assist Jericho Little League in the construction of a permanent, enclosed community baseball training facility at Carnarvon Park.
The privately-funded project has the support of Premier Eby, MP Grant, and the Vancouver Canadians.
Of all the levels of government, municipal is by far the most interesting to me.

One speaker made a great point.
Why, after the dead trees are cut down, are they then removed from the forest?
“The dead material supports the living material in a forest,” he said.
A lot of animals use the dead trees — and their presence dissuades people from going off-trail.
Tense debate between speakers and Park Board members regarding the final phase of tree removal in Stanley Park.
Opponents argued that dead trees serve as habitats for animals and must be protected.
Proponents warned that dead trees can fall on trails and injure people.

If passed by City Hall, other park projects — mainly in East Van — will be defunded indefinitely to pay for it.

Bryson noted that such moves would not be unprecedented in BC’s history.
In 1952, for example, the government implemented a ranked-order system, then in 1953 first-past-the-post was reinstated.
Both times, no public referendum was held, and the sky did not fall.

Bryson said that instead of putting such important issues to the (often under-informed and uninterested) masses, the government could:
1. Pass legislation directly
2. Form an all-party committee
3. Convene a citizens’ assembly
4. Make it part of an election campaign

Just heard a fascinating take from a speaker at the BC Special Committee on Democratic and Electoral Reform meeting.
Kala Bryson questioned why advocates of pro-rep keep pushing for “unnecessary and problematic” ballot measures, arguing that there are more effective options.
